STUDIES 1<br />

This unit assists students to develop those competencies needed<br />

for planning and teaching in selected curriculum areas. Content<br />

includes: the nature of the curriculum area/discipline and<br />

its role and contribution as a medium for education; introduction<br />

to relevant syllabuses and curriculum documents; lesson<br />

and curriculum unit planning activities; and teaching strategies<br />

designed to promote a range of learning experiences in<br />

selected curriculum areas.<br />

■ PRB368 SOCIAL SCIENCE CURRICULUM<br />

STUDIES 2<br />

Curriculum development within the context of contemporary<br />

policies, frameworks and agencies; general principles of measurement,<br />

assessment and evaluation; teaching and learning strategies;<br />

and issues and directions in curriculum development.<br />

■ PRB369 CURRICULUM IN SOCIAL EDUCATION<br />

Builds on SBB340 to develop a coherent and balanced understanding<br />

of the nature and role of Social Education, the<br />

Queensland Primary Schools Social Studies Syllabus and P-<br />

10 Social Education Framework and introduces other national<br />

and international syllabi and programs. Investigates some of<br />

the more recent significant initiatives in Social Education, such<br />

as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Education, Environmental<br />

Education and Global Education. Students design an innovative<br />

curriculum program for the classroom and clarify their<br />

own philosophy and degree of commitment to Social Education<br />

teaching.<br />

■ PRB370 DIRECTIONS IN SOCIAL EDUCATION<br />

Builds on PRB369 and SBB340 and analyses the contribution<br />

to social education in the classroom of areas, themes and<br />

topics, such as teaching for a better world, environmental education,<br />

peace and justice, effective citizenship, political literacy,<br />

human rights, development education, gender and equity,<br />

global education and futures education.<br />

■ PRB371 SOCIAL & ENVIRONMENTAL<br />

FOUNDATIONS<br />

Explores from an interdisciplinary perspective a number of<br />

thematic questions about teaching: the historical development<br />

of social and environmental foundations in the study of society;<br />

the current socio-cultural context of social and environmental<br />

education; culture and beliefs as an influence on social<br />

and environmental activity; the quality of natural and social<br />

systems in the world; resources: conservation and development;<br />

place and space, continuity and change, key skills<br />

and competencies, critical and creative thinking, perceptions,<br />

attitudes and values in social and environmental studies.<br />

■ PRB372 THE AUSTRALIAN LEGACY<br />

Examination of those forces which have shaped contemporary<br />

Australia. Through a consideration of this historical legacy,<br />

a better understanding of those social, economic and constitutional<br />

developments which are currently taking place in<br />

Australia can be achieved.<br />

■ PRB373 CONSUMER EDUCATION IN PRIMARY<br />

SCHOOLS<br />

This unit provides opportunities for primary school teachers<br />

to gain an awareness of the role and functions of consumers<br />

in the Australian economy, and the interrelationship between<br />

consumers, business and the government. It discusses consumer<br />

protection laws and the need for consumer protection.<br />

An examination of various teaching strategies and teaching<br />

resources and assists teachers to plan Consumer Education<br />

teaching programs for implementation in primary schools.<br />

■ PRB374 AUSTRALIA, ASIA & THE PACIFIC: A<br />

FUTURES APPROACH<br />

An introduction to the study of futures is attempted through<br />

an analysis of principal methods and contemporary eminent<br />

contributors. Methods and models are applied to the development<br />

of future scenarios and contemporary issues relevant to<br />

the region, e.g. population and migration, political institutions<br />

and systems, resource allocation and utilisation, sustainable<br />

development, environmental issues and structural change.<br />

Using understandings from the above, teaching methods and<br />

techniques are developed for the P-10 Social Education Curriculum.<br />

■ PRB375 ADVANCED CURRICULUM:<br />

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION<br />

This unit is designed to assist the beginning teacher to implement<br />

the Queensland Department of Education’s environmental<br />

policy in primary schools. The major goal is to develop<br />

expertise in the design and delivery of class programs and<br />

activities.<br />

■ PRB376 ORGANISATION & ADMINISTRATION<br />

OF ADULT & WORKPLACE EDUCATION<br />

Explores and analyses organisational structures and comparative<br />

administrative practices found to be successful in adult<br />

and workplace education settings. Special attention is given<br />

to the impact of organisational form and function; financial<br />

provision; planning and management; and organisational<br />

policy on servicing the needs of clients. The effect of national<br />

and international policies and issues; and current legislative<br />

requirements on organisational and administrative designs and<br />

processes is examined closely. Social justice considerations<br />

such as ethical practice and equity are integral components of<br />

this unit.<br />

■ PRB377 STUDIES OF SOCIETIES &<br />

ENVIRONMENT/HEALTH & PHYSICAL<br />

EDUCATION<br />

This unit develops an introductory understanding of the nature<br />

and purpose of the Wiltshire Report’s Studies of Society<br />

and Environment at the primary level. Current curriculum<br />

documents are analysed and teaching and learning strategies<br />

for their implementation are developed. The health section<br />

content includes: concepts and content incorporated in the<br />

philosophy of health education, the structure, management<br />

and evaluation of lessons in the school environment; planning<br />

learning experiences and developing health and physical<br />

education program modules.<br />

■ PRB378 KNOWING YOUR ENVIRONMENT<br />

This unit uses a interdisciplinary social science approach to<br />

explore the origins, nature and impact of various environmental<br />
