MANAGEMENT<br />

This unit empowers students to make effective management<br />

decisions within the advertising process. It examines the setting<br />

of advertising objectives, and the need for coordination<br />

of these with marketing, communication and organisational<br />

objectives. It develops a sound understanding of advertising<br />

regulations and ethics, budgeting, research and campaign coordination.<br />

It further examines management’s participation in<br />

the creative, media and production processes, and the contribution<br />

of advertising management to the cohesion and creativity<br />

of the agency.<br />

■ CON418 SEMINAR IN MEDIA STRATEGY<br />

One of the ultimate determinants of the effectiveness of any<br />

advertising campaign is the media strategy. This unit examines<br />

ways to improve efficiency in media planning, buying,<br />

coordination and research. It examines concepts of media decision<br />

making, market targeting through the creative use of<br />

media, and strategic planning. It explores current media campaigns,<br />

and encourages the development of a more creative<br />

and integrated approach to media.<br />

■ CON419 STRATEGIES FOR CREATIVE<br />

ADVERTISING<br />

This unit develops the implications arising from current theories<br />

of creative advertising. The unit requires students to develop<br />

an advanced applied and theoretical perspective of creative<br />

strategy. Areas for advanced discussion include the development<br />

of a creative process versus the concept of ‘illumination’,<br />

creative verification, and the use of appeals and execution<br />

styles, and how they affect the creative impact of a<br />

campaign or advertisement, and the message development of<br />

the communication process.<br />

■ CON420 THEORIES OF HUMAN<br />

COMMUNICATION<br />

This course surveys the intellectual currents that inform the<br />

communication discipline. As communication is a<br />

multidisciplinary study, a wide range of theories, methods and<br />

contexts will be covered. This course will provide a foundation<br />

for understanding communication in a sophisticated and<br />

systematic way, and will apply that understanding to real-life<br />

business situations.<br />

MARKETING COMMUNICATION<br />

Students will be developing the theoretical concepts of integrated<br />

marketing communication programs.<br />

■ CON423 ADVANCED CORPORATE WRITING<br />

This unit deals with current principles and practices in writing<br />

and designing corporate documents both on paper and<br />

online. Topics covered include the content, style and presentation<br />

of corporate documents such as memos, letters, reports,<br />

proposals, submissions, job portfolios, organisational<br />

policy and procedural manuals, and newsletter articles. Emphasis<br />

is placed on the politics of corporate writing, and the<br />

influence of new technologies such as Email on corporate<br />

culture.<br />

■ CON500 RESEARCH METHODS<br />

The purpose of this study is to provide students with a range<br />

of ideas and methods that will enable them to analyse, evaluate<br />

and conduct research in discipline areas related to business.<br />

It provides an essential and basic preparation for the<br />

development of a thesis or dissertation proposal. Areas of study<br />

cover both qualitative and quantitative approaches and include:<br />

research paradigms; analysis and criticism; research design;<br />

data collection; data manipulation and interpretation; and presentation.<br />

Designed to prepare students for writing their thesis; group<br />

instruction in techniques of thesis writing and what is involved<br />

Students choose a topic, have it approved and choose a supervisor<br />

under whose guidance they will undertake a literature<br />

review.<br />

needed to empower beginning teachers.<br />

The complex issues involved in catering for cultural diversity<br />

curriculum issues; English as a second language; school-community<br />

relations.<br />
