LAW & MANAGEMENT 2<br />

Students develop an understanding of both the legal framework<br />

within which the discipline operates and industrial relations<br />

concepts and practices insofar as they impinge upon occupational<br />

health and safety. Basic statistical techniques are<br />

reviewed as an introduction to the study of concepts of epidemiology<br />

applicable to an occupational setting.<br />

■ PUP250 OCCUPATIONAL HYGIENE<br />

Lectures, practical work and industrial visits to instruct students<br />

so that they may recognise, evaluate and control the<br />

physical, biological and Chemical environmental factors which<br />

can adversely affect the health, safety, comfort and efficiency<br />

of workers.<br />

■ PUP415 OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH<br />

Exploration of Chemical hazards in the working environment,<br />

epidemiological principles and practice, and identification of<br />

special risk groups in the workforce. Topics include: the pathological<br />

bases of disease in humans; Chronic occupational diseases;<br />

occupational skin conditions; respiratory diseases; biological<br />

hazards in the work environment (bacteria, parasites,<br />

viruses, rickettsia and fungi); Chemical and physical stresses<br />

and their physiological responses; physiological monitoring<br />

– principles and practice; special risk groups; epidemiological<br />

principles and practice.<br />

■ PUP430 HOME ECONOMICS CURRICULUM<br />

STUDIES 1<br />

The bases for making decisions about home economics curriculum<br />

design and implementation are explored in order for<br />

participants to appreciate the complexity of this process and<br />

the necessity to clarify their own philosophical base for teaching<br />

in the area. The skills appropriate for preparing and implementing<br />

sequenced units of work are developed.<br />

■ PUP511 OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH<br />

MANAGEMENT<br />

Provides students with the necessary skills to plan, organise,<br />

coordinate, control and evaluate a successful occupational health<br />

program in the workplace. Includes the study of the implementation<br />

of successful health assessment and surveillance progrms,<br />

and the planning, implementation and evaluation of health education<br />

and promotion programs. the issues of the mainenance<br />

of occupational health records in accordance with legal, ethical<br />

and confidentiality guidelines are addressed.<br />

■ PUP521 RISK MANAGEMENT<br />

This unit will provide students with the knowledge and skills<br />

for the >assessment and quantification of risk in the workplace.<br />

It will investigate the various models available to investigate<br />

and analyse accidents and propose strategies to prevent similar<br />

incidents in the future. Various hazard identification techniques<br />

such as HAZOP, Fault Tree Analysis and FMEA will<br />

be discussed. The subject will provide students with the ability<br />

to position occupational health and safety within an organisation’s<br />

strategic decision making process.<br />

■ SCB001 LEARNING AT UNIVERSITY<br />

Aims to develop students’ awareness and use of learning processes<br />

necessary for quality learning at university. It encourages<br />

a more meaningful approach to learning through the development<br />

of active learning strategies effective in scientific<br />

study. The content is closely allied to other first year units.<br />

Classes have an interactive format which require active student<br />

involvement.<br />

■ SCB100 COOPERATIVE EDUCATION<br />

Ten to 12 months placement in paid employment related to their<br />

course, in a commercial environment under the joint supervision<br />

of an industry supervisor and an academic adviser. An academic<br />

adviser obtains reports from the student and their work<br />

supervisor at regular intervals. The student is required to submit<br />

a written report on the conclusion of their placement . Results<br />

are determined on the basis of these reports and the employer’s<br />

evaluation of the student’s performance and development.<br />

Prerequisites: Completion of 4 semesters of a standard fulltime<br />

degree-level course, normally with a GPA of not less than<br />

4.5 overall<br />

■ SCB202 SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY & SOCIETY<br />

The origins of modern science and technology in a social and<br />

historical context leading to the study of their role and impact<br />

in contemporary society; includes case studies of the development<br />

of particular concepts, issues and science and technology<br />

based industries. Topics include: the study of the nature of science<br />

and technology; the sociological functioning of the scientific<br />

enterprise – its norms and values; the nature of scientific<br />

knowledge – objectivity and epistemological issues; the future<br />

of science and technology – policy and influences.<br />
