Foundations for least restrictive early education; philosophical<br />

and policy issues; integrating early intervention; nature of<br />

with support personnel; evaluation of individualised programs<br />

and teaching strategies; management of behaviour; family<br />

dynamics and parental needs.<br />

■ EAB300 EARLY CHILDHOOD ARTS 1<br />

Introductory principles, practices, philosophies and theories<br />

in the visual and performing arts as they relate to young children<br />

in various contexts: the arts as a way of knowing and<br />

expressing; creativity versus artistry; an overview of artistic<br />

development from birth to adolescence; the arts, culture, education<br />

and the young child. A main focus will be on the elements<br />

and concepts in the areas of the visual arts, music, drama,<br />

movement and dance with specific emphasis given to the visual<br />

arts: the development of the visual arts for children under five<br />

years of age and for school-aged children; assisting artistry<br />

with children under five years of age and with school-aged<br />

children.<br />

■ EAB301 EARLY CHILDHOOD ARTS 2<br />

Application of principles, practices, philosophies and theories<br />

in the areas of music, drama, movement and dance, with<br />

specific examples provided for how these arts areas provide<br />

unique opportunities for knowing and understanding. Children’s<br />

development and ways in which this development may<br />

be assisted are examined in the areas of music, dance, and<br />

drama across two age categories: under five years of age and<br />

school age. The integration of the arts in relation to the unique,<br />

shared elements and concepts across the various domains, and<br />

advocacy in the arts.<br />

Theories of social, emotional and creative development and their<br />

application; theoretical and empirical approaches to the study<br />

of creativity and self-expression from birth to eight years; the<br />

nature of creativity and its relationship to other areas of development;<br />

children’s recognition and production of emotions;<br />

processes involved in the socialisation of emotions; sex differences<br />

and contextual influences on development; individuality,<br />

self-knowledge and the development of personal identity;<br />

socialisation in the context of relationships, in particular those<br />

within the family, the peer context and the classroom.<br />

Review of previous experiences in literacy education from<br />

practice and the earlier unit; observation and assessment of<br />

the literacy learning abilities of a child as a basis for the development<br />

of a profile for planning; reporting to parents; development<br />

of frameworks for and planning of integrated language<br />

and literacy education programs appropriate to a range<br />

of children and a variety of educational contexts; modification<br />

of programs for children with special needs; study of issues<br />

in literacy and literacy education in early childhood contexts<br />

for children from birth to eight years of age.<br />

EDUCATION<br />

Approaches to the teaching and learning of mathematical concepts<br />

are reviewed with a focus on the development of the<br />

child; the sequence of development from early mathematical<br />

understandings to the application of number within a problem-solving<br />

framework; applications of technology.<br />

■ EAB308 EARLY CHILDHOOD SCIENCES,<br />

MATHEMATICS & TECHNOLOGY<br />

Overview of early childhood science, social studies and maths<br />

topics, concepts and processes; investigation of appropriate<br />

monitoring strategies; use of a variety of technologies; ways<br />

in which early childhood environments can be organised to<br />

support integrated, active, inquiry learning, with relevant resources<br />

from the immediate classroom, the outdoors, families<br />

and the local neighbourhood.<br />

■ EAB310 INTEGRATED EARLY CHILDHOOD<br />

CURRICULUM 2<br />

Current practices in Australian early childhood settings, understood<br />

within philosophical and historical perspectives; examination<br />

of key ideas informing the holistic curriculum approaches<br />

of the field; theories and practices associated with<br />

play; the celebration of difference with particular attention<br />

given to practices which are responsive to the values and needs<br />

of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders; personalised teaching<br />

and learning; indepth study of the knowledge base of the<br />

early childhood teacher practitioner; critical analysis of approaches<br />

to designing curriculum for the expanding range of<br />

services for young children and families in Australia.<br />

■ EAB311 ALTERNATIVE PROGRAMS IN EARLY<br />

CHILDHOOD<br />

The range of community programs which support the needs<br />

of children and families outside of mainstream early childhood<br />

settings (e.g. visits to community Aboriginal and Torres<br />

Strait Islander programs). A resource file of programs will be<br />

established by students to aid in future teaching, to help refer<br />

families to appropriate services, to build up a deepened awareness<br />

of models of parent-professional communication and to<br />

suggest alternative career paths in early childhood.<br />

■ EAB312 CASE STUDIES IN EARLY CHILDHOOD<br />

& FAMILY LITERACY<br />

Introduction to case study methods, adult literacy and intergenerational<br />

and family literacy, including clients from English<br />

and non-English speaking backgrounds; planning and<br />

implementing an inter-generational literacy program with a<br />

client and young children; reporting and reflecting upon the<br />

program; contributing to ongoing research in family literacy.<br />

■ EAB313 CHILDREN’S LITERATURE FOR EARLY<br />

CHILDHOOD SETTINGS<br />

A study of the significance of children’s literature as it furnishes<br />

literacy and language programs: origins and patterns of stories<br />

both traditional and contemporary as they reflect society; critical<br />

evaluation of books published nationally and internationally;<br />

acquisition of skills of selection for use in early childhood<br />

settings; planning appropriate long term quality literature programs<br />

that include a wide range of genre and current issues.<br />
