YEARS)<br />

A significant social, political or curriculum issue affecting the<br />

delivery of a child care and education service; teaching file of<br />

management and teaching strategies, community resources,<br />

parent and staff communications, evaluated plans; competence<br />

in providing a safe caring learning environment which reflects<br />

the cultural and social backgrounds of the children; competence<br />

in leadership and responsibility for the total program<br />

for a period of time.<br />

KNOWLEDGE IN ACTION<br />

Critical reflection on knowledge in action as teachers work in<br />

early childhood programs; history of the development of key<br />

methods for studying teachers at work in different early childhood<br />

programs; analysis of research which examines issues<br />

related to teaching in early childhood programs.<br />

POLICIES<br />

Examination is made of the processes of policy development<br />

and sources of influence on policies in the area of early childhood<br />

CHILDHOOD CONTEXTS<br />

Development of skills for critical evaluation of current developmental<br />

issues in early childhood within an ecological framework;<br />

knowledge of a broad range of developmental and methodological<br />

issues of research in early childhood including infant<br />

development, family, educational and care contexts; the<br />

processes and patterns of symbolic development in young<br />

children; critical discussion of developmental research and<br />

the implications of this knowledge for early childhood education.<br />

Aspects of family diversity; the interactions between young<br />

PROCESSES & STRATEGIES<br />

The management processes in educational and other professional<br />

settings; the identification of various leadership skills<br />

and effective communication styles. The understanding and<br />

facilitation of change are explored. Consulting, advocacy and<br />

empowerment strategies are identified in terms of the students’<br />

particular work sites.<br />

Human resource management; staff selection, staff supervision<br />

and appraisal, staff development and the importance of<br />

developing evaluation and facilitation skills. Strategies for<br />

and professional settings are explored.<br />

■ EAN607 CONSULTATION & TEAMWORK<br />

Analysis of typical professional consultancy and teamwork<br />

contexts within education and early childhood services, including<br />

contributions from other disciplines (e.g. medicine,<br />

psychology, therapies, social welfare, law) and agencies (e.g.<br />

health, community services, police); theoretical and practical<br />

understanding of intra- and interpersonal qualities which affect<br />

consultancy and teamwork; theory and application of<br />

group development processes related to effective task accomplishment.<br />

Factors impinging on the quality of interdisciplinary<br />

and interagency teamwork; strategies for reviewing and<br />

improving consultation and teamwork.<br />

■ EAN608 CONSTRUCTIONS OF CHILDHOOD,<br />

CHILD-REARING & EARLY EDUCATION<br />

Critical analysis of the constructions of childhood, child-rearing<br />

and early education across the twentieth century and how<br />

those constructions are linked to social, political and economic<br />

change; frameworks used for analyses will be drawn from<br />

ecological and critical approaches to theorising and philosophical<br />

perspectives on theory; exploration of the assumptions<br />

which students hold with respect to childhood, child-rearing<br />

and early education; consideration of how conflicting ideas<br />

within early childhood education are reconciled.<br />

Developmental processes in the expressive and language arts;<br />

principles of learning; the development of personal identity<br />

in young children; creative and expressive processes for language<br />

and literacy in early childhood programs.<br />

■ EAP412 THINKING & PROBLEM SOLVING 1<br />

The processes of interest in active learning, inquiry and problem<br />

solving; environments and strategies which promote the<br />

development of active learning and inquiry by young children;<br />

monitoring progress.<br />

■ EAP413 PROGRAM PLANNING & TEACHING<br />

STRATEGIES 1<br />

Development of those areas of knowledge and skills essential<br />

to the practical decision-making of early childhood teachers.<br />

An off-campus component of this unit includes two<br />

practicums, each of twelve days, in two early childhood settings<br />

(child care, preschool, kindergarten or early primary).<br />

■ EAP416 CREATIVITY & LANGUAGE 2<br />

Discipline-based processes; the interrelated and unique contribution<br />

of each of the arts; the teacher’s role as a curriculum<br />

■ EAP417 THINKING & PROBLEM SOLVING 2<br />

The child as explorer, problem solver and meaning maker;<br />

organising for active learning, inquiry and problem solving;<br />

■ EAP418 PROGRAM PLANNING & TEACHING<br />

STRATEGIES 2<br />

The development and integration of student teachers’ knowledge,<br />

skills and attitudes from the curriculum development<br />

and socio-cultural units to assist them in performing and justifying<br />

their diverse roles in teaching practice. An off-campus<br />

component of this unit includes two practicums each of six-<br />
