Exploration of the language of medicine; analyses medical<br />

abbreviations and symbols used in medicine are identified;<br />

abstracts from patient records are explained and interpreted<br />

with individuals, groups and communities in the<br />

context of competent professionals working in a range of public<br />

health settings. Covers public education for health, principles<br />

of adult learning, diffusion and adoption of new healthrelated<br />

behaviours; a critique of the use and role of information;<br />

the use of mass media; and communication within health<br />

Introduction to the philosophy and approach of public health;<br />

approaches including: health promotion, intersectoral action<br />

for health and healthy public policy. The role of public health<br />

in Australia and overseas, its main components and some of<br />

MANAGEMENT 2<br />

Continuation of PUB199. There is an emphasis on analysis<br />

and improvement of health information management throughout<br />

hospitals. The examination of health information services<br />

will move outside the medical records department of hospitals<br />

to wards, bed allocation and admission officers; accident<br />

and emergency departments; outpatients and allied health services<br />

and other specialised hospitals services such as radiology,<br />

pharmacy and pathology. Skills in health data management,<br />

forms design and statistical presentation of hospital or<br />

health services activities are developed.<br />

The health, social and economic implications of podiatric care<br />

It also provides foundation studies essential to the preclinical<br />

student in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions<br />

commonly manifest in the foot.<br />

On completion, students should be able to demonstrate competent<br />

treatment and develop a professional attitude towards patients,<br />

clinical teaching and care of equipment.<br />

Introduction to a wide range of diagnostic and physical treatment<br />

studied in direct connection with ongoing clinical studies and<br />

the theoretical component of podiatric medicine lectures.<br />

■ PUB306 PHARMACOLOGY<br />

Designed to ensure that students understand basic drug therapies<br />

their patients may be using, the groups of drugs used for<br />

specific diseases and their application and relevance to podiatry<br />

and clinical podiatry. Emphasis is placed on drug groups<br />

and their use for specific disease, rather than proprietary<br />

brands. Students learn to recognise the drug groups and know<br />

the system they are acting on in the body. In addition, differentiation<br />

between the different groups within one group of<br />

systemic drugs and why they are used for a condition is emphasised.<br />

■ PUB309 DESIGN APPLICATIONS<br />

This unit is planned to introduce students to the vocabulary<br />
