BUSINESS ORGANISATION<br />

Whereas ‘Business and the International Environment’ is concerned<br />

with broad, international trends, this unit aims to provide<br />

a detailed examination of typical impacts of the international<br />

environment upon organisation: management, structure,<br />

work, operations and human resource capabilities. The unit<br />

also examines the interface between management/organisation<br />

and the external environment of business.<br />

■ GSN105 INTERNATIONAL MARKETING<br />

This unit covers international marketing theory and planning,<br />

with a strong applied emphasis. Issues will include the segmentation<br />

of international markets, life cycle and contingency<br />

approaches to international market entry choice, organisation<br />

marketing, channels and market development and extension.<br />

Planning issues will focus on the strategic marketing processes<br />

involved, including international market research, and<br />

their application to regions and countries in the Asia/Pacific,<br />

European and North American areas.<br />

INTERNATIONALLY<br />

This unit develops both a sensitivity and a skills base to lead<br />

and manage effectively in a global setting. The unit explores<br />

different patterns of behaviour, custom and practice across<br />

the world in order to prepare students for the challenge of<br />

leading and managing. Different levels of analyses – individual,<br />

group, organisational, industry/regional, societal/cultural<br />

– are brought to bear in this exploration.<br />

■ GSN107 MANAGING INNOVATION &<br />

ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT<br />

The nature and processes of innovation (as applied to factors<br />

such as: products, services, technology, delivery, network<br />

structures) enterprise creation and development. Assessment<br />

of the entrepreneur and new venture team as well as the business<br />

opportunity and resource requirements. The unit explores<br />

methods of establishing ventures from multidisciplinary perspectives.<br />

At the completion of this unit, students will possess<br />

the necessary skills and critical insight to contribute to the<br />

management of innovation and enterprise development in a<br />

global setting.<br />

■ GSN108 INDUSTRY PLACEMENT<br />

Students may proceed to this course of study if they have completed<br />

GSN207 Organisational Analysis and Consulting, and<br />

if they have arranged an industry placement and project acceptable<br />

to the Course Coordinator. The industry placement<br />

will take the form of a period of time spent with an organisation<br />

and during this period a consulting report will be undertaken.<br />

This project enables students to undertake a piece of applied<br />

■ GSN200 BUSINESS STRATEGIES<br />

This unit develops a manager’s knowledge, analytical understanding<br />

and action-taking competencies. The paradigm<br />

adopted is that of strategic management, analyses of<br />

stakeholders, environments, capabilities, strategy formulation,<br />

implementation and evaluation. Teaching strategies emphasise<br />

the process of management as well as analysis, content<br />

and concepts.<br />

■ GSN201 GLOBAL BUSINESS NETWORKS<br />

Global communication technologies are developing at a rapid<br />

rate. They will undergird the operation of the global economy<br />

and change the operation of local business organisations, including<br />

the management of information and information flows.<br />

The unit examines this development from technological, cultural<br />

and business strategy perspectives. Experience with the<br />

INTERNET is provided with particular attention paid to its<br />

potential to change business fundamentals, such as marketing<br />

and advertising, strategic alliances, internal and external communication<br />

and management of information.<br />

■ GSN202 MANAGERIAL ACCOUNTING<br />

This unit, which deals with accounting concepts and principles,<br />

includes topics such as development of the profit and<br />

loss account and balance sheet, reporting aspects of the balance<br />

sheet, asset and liability recognition and management,<br />

cost/volume/profit analysis, manufacturing costs, budgeting<br />

and managerial decision making.<br />

■ GSN203 MANAGERIAL ECONOMICS<br />

This unit examines principles of economics pertinent to managerial<br />

decision-making in the domestic and international economic<br />

environments. Topic areas include: an introduction to<br />

economics, demand analysis and forecasting, cost analysis,<br />

market strategy, investment analysis, international trade and<br />

the balance of payments. At the completion of the unit, students<br />

should be capable of applying economic principles to<br />

problems of resource allocation in the firm, in industry and in
