This course is designed to give optometry students an ability<br />

An introduction to general psychology to give a base for subsequent<br />

of individuals within groups; perception, human<br />

development, and stress management, individual differences,<br />

A basis for the study of the promotion of psychological health<br />

of individuals at differing developmental stages. The content<br />

developmental aspects of childhood, adolescence, middle<br />

and old age and specific areas such as sexual development,<br />

death and dying; relationships to work and professional<br />

environments.<br />

METHODS<br />

An overview of the purposes and strategies of research; elementary<br />

research design; operationalising variables; descriptive<br />

statistics; distributions; measures of central tendency and<br />

spread; standard scores and percentiles. Comparing variables<br />

through correlation; introduction to the use of SPSS.<br />

■ SSB931 PERCEPTION<br />

Explores the way we gain information about the world through<br />

our various senses. Whilst most emphasis is given to hearing<br />

and vision, the senses of touch, smell, taste, and orientation<br />

are also covered. In each case, the unit provides an overview<br />

of the nature of the physical stimulus, the peripheral and central<br />

structures involved in processing these stimuli, and the<br />

various theories which have been proposed regarding how each<br />

modality operates. In all cases, a strong emphasis is placed on<br />

critical assessment of theories and the experimental evidence<br />

supporting them. The unit also introduces the major psychological<br />

procedures employed in perceptual research, and highlights<br />

applied research in each domain.<br />

■ SSB932 INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY 1B<br />

A more detailed consideration of a range of topics considered<br />

in introductory psychology units with a focus on research processes,<br />

in particular branches of psychology to be studied in<br />

second and third years. Includes topics in social and organisational<br />

psychology, developmental psychology and cognitive<br />

psychology, physiological psychology, personality and<br />

abnormal psychology.<br />

■ SSB933 COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY<br />

This unit explores both the cognitive mechanisms involved in<br />

processing information and behavioural models of learning. The<br />

information processing component covers topics including:<br />

sensory storage, attention, pattern recognition, working memory,<br />

long-term memory, and applied psychology. The learning component<br />

deals with the phenomenology of behavioural learning<br />

paradigms including classical and operant conditioning. In both<br />

cases, the unit emphasises the need for critical analysis of theories<br />

and the expermental evidence supporting them.<br />
