■ PSP510 SPECIALISATION<br />

The student undertakes a supervised program of study in an<br />

approved selected field. The student may choose from a limited<br />

list of approved fields, depending on staff expertise and<br />

availability. Students may apply for approval for a specific<br />

specialisation utilising units offered elsewhere in <strong>QUT</strong> or at<br />

another tertiary institution which must, for approval, also lead<br />

on to an Advanced Specialisation if they are enrolled in PS70.<br />

Students will normally choose a specialisation which relates<br />

to their intended Research Project. Areas of Specialisation are<br />

Regional and Local Development, Urban Housing and Community<br />

Development, Urban Design, Environmental and Resource<br />

Planning, and Special Topic.<br />

■ PSP512 PLANNING PRACTICE II<br />

The core of this unit is a problem-solving group project focusing<br />

on a planning region which is generally larger and more<br />

complex than a single town, such as a town and its hinterland,<br />

a metropolitan region or a functional rural region. This unit<br />

offers scope for the application of knowledge and skills gained<br />

in other units, including PSP509 Regional and Metropolitan<br />

Policy. Relevant aspects of planning legislation will be included.<br />

■ PSP513 FIELD TRIP<br />

The field trip will consist of a structured, staff-guided visit of<br />

about one week to one or more of a number of appropriate<br />

locations, including non-metropolitan areas of Queensland,<br />

other metropolitan centres in Australia, and possibly overseas.<br />

■ PUB103 PRIMARY HEALTH CARE 1<br />

This unit introduces students to the principles, strategies and<br />

practice or primary health care with special reference to community,<br />

family and workplace settings. The importance of<br />

health promotion, prevention, empowerment and intersectoral<br />

collaboration in primary health care will also be examined.<br />

STUDIES OF THE FAMILY<br />

An introduction to the social sciences (Sociology, Psychology<br />

shelter on the basic need of individuals and families.<br />

■ PUB107 INTRODUCTION TO ENVIRONMENTAL<br />

HEALTH<br />

A brief history of environmental health in Queensland; the<br />

current role of environmental health officers within the public<br />

health agencies at all levels of government and the principal<br />

public health legislation in this state; development of an<br />

understanding of introductory law and environmental law, the<br />

complexity of environmental systems, the effects of pollutants<br />

on such systems and the interdisciplinary approaches<br />

needed to address these problems.<br />

■ PUB112 OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY 1<br />

This subject will introduce students to the basic concepts and<br />

theoretical framework of occupational health and safety such<br />

that they can identify health and safety problems in the<br />

workplace; be aware of strategies for dealing with such problems;<br />

and become familiar with the legislation, government<br />

agencies and health personnel associated with the working<br />

environment. Topics covered will include the physical, Chemical<br />

and biological environments, ergonomics. The students<br />

will also develop knowledge and skills associated with the<br />

actual measurement of the physical and Chemical working<br />

environment and evaluation of the data collected.<br />

RELATIONSHIPS<br />

This unit is concerned with the wellbeing of individuals and<br />

families; to achieve this goal, individuals must have an understanding<br />

of development from conception to old age, and a<br />

critical awareness of the social processes which influence this<br />

development.<br />

■ PUB127 HEALTH ISSUES IN AUSTRALIA<br />

Australians major health concerns; the multidimensional nature<br />

of health; initiatives undertaken to address health problems<br />

as a pivotal concept in health status.<br />

■ PUB130 AUSTRALIAN HEALTH INDUSTRY<br />

A broad overview of the systems of health care in Australia<br />

and their methods of operation. The public and private health<br />

and medical care sectors are discussed. The political environment,<br />

health care institutions, community health, public health,<br />

and the problems of coordination and integration of health<br />

services are also studied.<br />

■ PUB199 HEALTH INFORMATION<br />

MANAGEMENT 1<br />

An introduction to the principles of health record management<br />

and their application in hospitals; presents an overview<br />

of the interrelationship between the various processes of the<br />

medical record department and functionally related areas in<br />

health care facilities. Topics include: the structure, format and<br />

use of medical records, the function of medical record departments,<br />

quantitative analysis of medical records, and health<br />

information collection and retrieval systems, both manual and<br />

computerised.<br />

The causes, effects, control measures, standards, legislation<br />

■ PUB201 PUBLIC HEALTH NUTRITION 1<br />

The history of food and nutrition in Australia; the food system,<br />

an introduction to proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins<br />

and minerals, introduction to food grouping systems, dietary<br />

guidelines, the recommended dietary intakes, nutrition through<br />

the life cycle; introduction to the food supply, food problems<br />

and nutrition problems; nutrition as a public health issue, international<br />

nutrition issues.<br />
