COURSE STRUCTURES<br />

Doctor of Juridical Science (LW50)<br />

Location: Gardens Point campus<br />

Course Duration: Minimum of 2 1 /2 years full-time, 5 years part-time<br />

Total Credit Points: 288<br />

Standard Credit Points/Full-Time Semester: 48 (Average)<br />

Entry Requirements<br />

On the recommendation of the Dean of the Faculty of Law, the Research Management Committee may<br />

admit to candidature for the degree an applicant who:<br />

(i) holds or has completed the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Laws at <strong>QUT</strong> with at least<br />

Second Class Honours Division A or its equivalent from another institution which in the opinion of the<br />

Dean maintains standards comparable with those required for the award of the degree of Bachelor of<br />

Laws at <strong>QUT</strong>, or<br />

(ii) is a graduate of another institution and is accepted by the Dean and the Research Management Committee<br />

as having qualifications equivalent to those specified in paragraph (i), or<br />

(iii) has either (a) completed the requirements for a degree of Bachelor of Laws at <strong>QUT</strong> or its equivalent<br />

from another institution which, in the opinion of the Dean, maintains standards comparable with those<br />

required for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Laws at <strong>QUT</strong>, or (b) is admitted to practice as a<br />

barrister or solicitor in Queensland or another state or territory of Australia or, who in the opinion of<br />

the Dean, is similarly qualified; and in both cases (a) and (b) has completed at least 48 credit points<br />

towards the requirements for a degree of Master of Laws at <strong>QUT</strong> or its equivalent from another institution<br />

which in the opinion of the Dean maintains standards comparable with those required for the award of<br />

the degree of Master of Laws at <strong>QUT</strong>; or<br />

(iv) holds or has completed the requirements for a degree of Master of Legal Practice at <strong>QUT</strong>,<br />

and, in any of the situations above,<br />

(v) has a minimum of two years’ professional experience in a position of responsibility appropriate to the<br />

proposed course of study, and<br />

(vi) is recommended by the Dean as being suitably qualified in the particular field of study in which the<br />

applicant proposes to be a candidate.<br />

Course Structure<br />

Students undertake 96 credit points of coursework units taken from Schedule 1 and complete a dissertation<br />

component.<br />

Stage 1<br />

96 credit points of coursework units taken from Schedule 1 in the entry for LW51 Master of Laws by<br />

Coursework. The unit LWN048 Advanced Legal Research must be undertaken by candidates in their<br />

coursework component. (Schedule 1 lists units available in <strong>1997</strong>.)<br />

Stage 2<br />

Dissertation component (approximately 70 000 words).<br />

Full-Time Course Structure<br />

Year 1, Semesters 1 and 2<br />

Units taken from Schedule 1 for any given year equal to 48 credit points per semester. (Whole year units<br />

are counted as 12 credit points per semester.)<br />
