■ LEB304 CHILDREN WITH SOCIAL &<br />

EMOTIONAL DIFFICULTIES<br />

The overview of social and emotional development, theories<br />

of social and emotional development; adult-child relationships<br />

and issues of authority and discipline; the socialisation of<br />

emotions, expression of emotions, emotional disturbances;<br />

self-concept and self-esteem. One of four subjects which offer<br />

enhanced background in the inclusion of children with<br />

disabilities and learning difficulties.<br />

■ LEB305 UNDERSTANDING CHILDREN WITH<br />

INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES<br />

Introduction to intellectual impairment, cognitive development<br />

delay, slow learners and the most prevalent conditions which<br />

include a degree of cognitive handicap; theory and practice<br />

relating to classroom responses in regular settings; assessment<br />

of functional attainments and planning learning in basic curriculum<br />

areas; second of four subjects which offer enhanced<br />

background in the inclusion of children with disabilities and<br />

learning difficulties.<br />

■ LEB331 TEACHING CHILDREN WITH LOW<br />

INCIDENCE DISABILITIES<br />

Introduction to a wide range of low incidence exceptionalities<br />

(e.g. sensory impairments, developmental delay and health<br />

impairments such as Epilepsy, Asthma and Hepatitis, etc.);<br />

methods of managing associated disabling conditions; implementation<br />

and evaluation of programming; support and referral<br />

services.<br />

■ LEB332 TEACHING EXCEPTIONAL STUDENTS<br />

Integrates a basic understanding and application of learning<br />

theory as it applies to exceptional populations. Focuses on<br />

approaches to teaching particular exceptional groups. Provides<br />

an opportunity for development of specialist skills and resources<br />

in one of the following areas: (a) students with learning<br />

difficulties; (b) gifted students; (c) students with low incidence<br />

disabilities, e.g. hearing impaired, visually impaired or<br />

physically handicapped; (d) behaviourally or emotionally disturbed<br />

students.<br />

■ LEB333 ADULT LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT<br />

The psychological foundations of human learning and development<br />

with special emphasis on adults. Contemporary theories<br />

and research issues such as cognition and learning, the<br />

effect of motivation on learning, understanding group dynam-<br />

ics, self/identity development, and creating effective learning<br />

environments will be explored.<br />

■ LEB334 ACQUISITION & ADAPTABILITY OF<br />

WORKPLACE KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS<br />

Explores the underlying theoretical constructs which may<br />

enhance the acquisition of knowledge and skills. In accord<br />

with the National Training Reform Agenda, issues such as<br />

multi-skilling, contextualised learning, intervention to accelerate<br />

performance, and transfer of knowledge and skill are<br />

addressed.<br />

■ LEB335 HUMAN DEVELOPMENT &<br />

EDUCATION<br />

Life span development for students interested in early childhood,<br />

primary or secondary. Theoretical perspectives on human<br />

development; cognitive, language, moral and social-emotional<br />

development; understanding differences in learners: the<br />

impact of ethnicity and culture on human development, exceptional<br />

development, and the concept of inclusive education.<br />

■ LEB336 PSYCHOLOGY OF LEARNING &<br />

TEACHING<br />

Theories of learning, metacognition, motivation, problemsolving,<br />

thinking and creativity. Intelligence and thinking<br />

styles. Psychological dimensions of assessment. Creating optimum<br />

environments for learning. Teaching and learning implications<br />

of ethnicity and culture. Teaching to difference in a<br />

context of inclusive education.<br />

■ LEB337 GIFTED LEARNERS<br />

This unit provides a framework for understanding and evaluating<br />

the needs of gifted learners. It emphasises identification,<br />

learning and teaching styles, sound emotional issues,<br />

research findings and resources associated with gifted learners.<br />

Provision is also made for some practicum work with<br />

gifted learners.<br />

■ LEB338 THE INDIVIDUAL IN ADULT &<br />

WORKPLACE EDUCATION<br />

Tailoring instruction to the needs and strengths of individuals<br />

and acquiring confidence in planning, organising and implementing<br />

learning experiences. The focus ranges from setting<br />

up initial meetings to creating responsive positive learning<br />

environments and evaluating outcomes in terms of individual<br />

learners.<br />

■ LEB420 INTERPERSONAL PSYCHOLOGY IN<br />

EDUCATION<br />

Historical development and major principles of interpersonal<br />

psychology; concepts related to the formation and development<br />

of interpersonal relationships; particular concepts and<br />

their application to education; interpersonal relationships with<br />

exceptional students; emotionality; models of effective teaching;<br />

self-concept; small group development; applications of<br />

interpersonal psychology. Study school for external students<br />

strongly recommended.<br />
