work to published work in the field of study, and adopt the<br />

style of the Australian Journal of Earth Sciences for the written<br />

report. Each project is assessed on the basis of an extensive<br />

written report and an oral presentation.<br />

■ ESB703 GEOLOGY REVIEWS<br />

Within this unit students develop a written discussion of a geological<br />

problem or issue that is comparable to the focus of their<br />

own research project. Using available published literature, students<br />

critically analyse data and conclusions presented by other<br />

researchers in order to synthesise a discussion of the geological<br />

issue or case. The report focuses on those geological components<br />

that justify its selection as a geological review.<br />

■ ESB704 ADVANCED STUDIES IN EARTH<br />

SCIENCE<br />

Provides a selection of coursework appropriate to fourth-level<br />

studies in earth science disciplines. The unit has a modular<br />

structure that not only accommodates the range of advanced<br />

level studies needed to support research projects of individual<br />

students but also avoids promoting overspecialisation at the<br />

Honours level. From the 4- and 8-credit point modules indicated,<br />

students select any combination of modules appropriate<br />

to their interests and research project to total 20<br />

■ ESB705 COMPLEMENTARY STUDIES<br />

Provides students with skills that allow them to formulate and<br />

write a research proposal, to be capable of reading scientific<br />

literature with a view of abstracting critical aspects, and to<br />

produce reports that are written in a journal format and at a<br />

standard that could lead to publication. The unit also addresses<br />

philosophical issues such as ethics, professional integrity and<br />

plagiarism, and provides workshops in practical methods relevant<br />

to research in geology. These workshops include: (a)<br />

SEM unit; XRD unit; ICP and AAS analysis; (b) computing<br />

skills; (c) sample collection and processing; (d) data presentation<br />

and geological mapping methods.<br />

■ ESN110 ADVANCED TOPICS IN EARTH<br />

SCIENCE 1<br />

This unit facilitates students in developing an advanced understanding<br />

of a topic in earth science that is highly relevant<br />

to their proposed research. The content is therefore variable<br />

and depends on the earth science topic chosen.<br />

■ ESN130 COMPUTER APPLICATIONS IN EARTH<br />

SCIENCE<br />

Examination of up to five computer programs relevant to a<br />

particular aspect of earth science operating on a range of systems;<br />

readings on the theoretical base for each program; case<br />

studies for each application and an assessment of the results<br />

of the applications.<br />

■ ESN140 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY 1<br />

A variety of field and laboratory techniques for the collection<br />

of data in a particular earth science discipline; the practical<br />

application of these techniques; strategies for assessing their<br />

appropriateness for particular problems; the theoretical basis<br />

of the research.<br />

■ ESN160 SEMINARS<br />

Students may present several seminars ranging from a summary<br />

of background to a particular topic to a preliminary data<br />

presentation. The unit may also involve attending external<br />

seminars or workshops.<br />

■ ESN170 LITERATURE SURVEY<br />

Develops the detailed background of a student’s research topic<br />

and extends the student’s knowledge into current and relevant<br />

■ GSN100 GLOBAL BUSINESS STRATEGIES<br />

This unit places business strategy and policy firmly in a global<br />

context, developing knowledge, analytical understanding<br />

and action-taking competencies. The paradigm adopted is that<br />

of strategic management: analysis of stakeholders, special<br />

emphasis on the global environment and capabilities, strategy<br />

formulation, implementation and evaluation. Teaching methodologies<br />

emphasise the process of management in a global<br />

environment as well as analysis, content and concepts.<br />

Prerequisites: PG with an UG degree in Business, Commerce<br />

or Economics; or 48 credit points from the core of GS81<br />

■ GSN101 INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENT OF<br />

BUSINESS<br />

This unit places business in the context of the world system.<br />

Business operates in an increasingly international environment<br />

and the aim of this unit is to provide a detailed theoretical and<br />

practical understanding of that environment, its current and<br />

future trends. The focus will be upon: the economic, social<br />

and political factors conditioning contemporary international<br />

business structures and relations as well as its likely future<br />

developments.<br />

■ GSN102 INTERNATIONAL FINANCE &<br />

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT<br />

This unit analyses international trade in goods and services in<br />

the context of the firm and its management. While it looks at<br />

the theoretical foundations upon which trade rests and the<br />

financial institutions and mechanisms which facilitate it, it<br />

also looks at the practical aspects of export and import activities,<br />

foreign investment, and establishing operations in a host<br />

country. The unit also discusses the various national and international<br />

bodies and agreements which facilitate and regulate<br />

trade and financial flows. At the theoretical level, particular<br />

topics covered include: the theory of comparative advantage;<br />

the balance of payments; the role of tariff and non-tariff<br />

trade barriers; international financial markets; international<br />

financial management; exchange rate determination; and international<br />

banking. At the practical level, particular topics<br />

include: terminology; exporters, importers, and foreign investors’<br />

responsibilities; export and import documentation; finance<br />

for international product, service, and capital transactions;<br />

risk and insurance as they relate to foreign transactions.<br />
