■ PUB312 HOME ECONOMICS CURRICULUM<br />

STUDIES 1<br />

Provides students with a range of understandings and competencies<br />

for analysing, interpreting and managing home economics<br />

classrooms in order to maximise learning. Long and<br />

short term planning is explored with an emphasis on planning,<br />

implementing and evaluating lessons using a variety of<br />

strategies, resources and assessment techniques. The nature<br />

of home economics and how this is manifest in curriculum<br />

documents is examined.<br />

■ PUB313 DESIGN<br />

Design has a relevance to both the teaching and learning process<br />

and the discipline of home economics. In the areas of textiles,<br />

food and shelter there is a role for the application of<br />

design as well as critical evaluation and communication of<br />

the products of design; provides students with generic design<br />

knowledge as well as experience in the application of this<br />

knowledge in the specific areas of home economics.<br />

■ PUB314 EPIDEMIOLOGY & STATISTICS<br />

Fundamental principles of epidemiology as the study of the<br />

health, morbidity and mortality of the population; examines<br />

the role of epidemiology in identifying health problems as<br />

well as seeking measure to control or prevent the occurrence<br />

of disease and injury in human populations; introduces students<br />

to a wide range of study designs in areas including clinical,<br />

social and behavioural epidemiology; application of epidemiology<br />

to a range of issues and settings through evaluating<br />

the design of selected studies. Introduction to statistics;<br />

statistical analyses using a range of techniques and their application<br />

in a range of public health contexts; practice in the<br />

presentation of statistical data and the application of basic statistical<br />

methods.<br />

■ PUB316 RESEARCH METHODS<br />

An understanding of research methodology is essential to all<br />

Public Health Professionals. This unit will present an overview<br />

of the role of quantitative and qualitative methods in<br />

Public Health research. Specific topics covered in the unit will<br />

include: the scientific approach to research, development of<br />

hypotheses and theories, testing of hypotheses, RESEARCH<br />

questions, Research design, experimental design, surveys and<br />

quasi-experimental design, design and use of questionnaires,<br />

accessing and collating the literature, dissemination of Research<br />

results, evaluation of Research, ethics and Research,<br />

seeking Research funds and development of Research proposals.<br />

■ PUB318 CONCEPTUAL FOUNDATIONS<br />

This unit introduces the conceptual foundations of home economics<br />

and significant societal issues that impinge the area of<br />

study will be analysed and critically examined. The history of<br />

home economics and the link between home economics theory<br />

and practice will be considered with an emphasis on developing<br />

a personal philosophy of home economics.<br />

Issues related to Choosing a diet which will promote health;<br />

nutritional needs for humans; translating these to food selection<br />

and preparation.<br />

■ PUB321 TEXTILES 1<br />

Scientific understanding and aesthetic aspects of textiles, their<br />

selection, use and care, with reference to specific end uses;<br />

practical aspects of construction and surface design of textile<br />

articles; textile project.<br />

STUDIES 2<br />

Encourages students to make independent judgements about<br />

home economics curriculum decision-making, within syllabus<br />

guidelines and broader systems policies concomitant with<br />

national and international trends in education and society. Students<br />

are given the opportunity to explore current issues and<br />

emerging and future trends in home economics and to develop<br />

a confident approach to school-based curriculum development.<br />

FOUNDATIONS<br />

Home economics is concerned with the well-being of individuals<br />

and families; to achieve this goal, individuals must<br />

have an understanding of development from conception to old<br />

age, and a critical awareness of the social processes which<br />

influence this development; home economics issues.<br />

HEALTH BEHAVIOUR<br />

The foundations of the discipline of health education, its theoretical<br />

education and health promotion.<br />

■ PUB331 SHELTER STUDIES 2<br />

The linking of human physical and psychosocial needs, environmental<br />

and technological issues and design aspects to the<br />

effective provision of shelter, with emphasis being placed on<br />

the development of advanced skills and knowledge; environmental<br />

and technological aspects which have implications on<br />

shelter design for the well-being of the individual and families;<br />

effective design to accommodate Changing family structures;<br />

legislative updates.<br />

■ PUB336 WOMEN’S HEALTH<br />

Exploration of the data and health issues related to women’s<br />

■ PUB338 SUBSTANCE USE IN CONTEMPORARY<br />

SOCIETY<br />

An introduction to analytical models, statistical evidence and<br />

health education and health promotion strategies applicable<br />

to substance use and abuse, to familiarise students with the<br />

contemporary nature and extent of substance use in Australia;<br />

examines models and strategies to address these issues.<br />

History and philosophy of nutrition education. Theoretical<br />

basis of nutrition education. Development, implementation and<br />
