exposición de los neonatos a los agentes infecciosos.
Los agentes infecciosos reconocidos como causa de
mortalidad neonatal se encuentran en la tabla 59-6.
El examen postmortem detallado es el mejor medio
para establecer el diagnóstico de causas infecciosas
de enfermedad y muerte neonatal. Algunos agentes
infecciosos producen una patología característica
que puede identificarse mediante examen macroscópico.
Por ejemplo, las lesiones renales hemorrágicas y
neccotizantes se encuentran en los cachorros con infección
herpética y los parásitos adultos se identifican
en el canal intestinal de los animales que agonizan
por parasitismo. Los estudios adicionales por lo usual
son necesarios para establecer el diagnóstico definitivo.
Las muestras de hígado, bazo, pulmón y conducto
gastrointestinal deben remitirse como rutina para
el examen histopatológíco, cultivo bacteriano y aislamiento
viral. Si se encuentran lesiones evidentes du-
mitirse especímenes de ellas. Para ciertas enfermedades
infecciosas, como la brucelosis, puede ser de utilidad
realizar estudios serológicos o cultivos de la madre
u otros miembros de la colonia para establecer la
fuente o extensión de la infección.
