ABSTRACT
Glutamate is the most abundant free amino acid in the brain and the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the
nervous system. Its importance lies in the role it plays as a chemical messenger, which is essential in the
communication between nerve cells and its participation in the functioning of the sensory and memory systems.
However, various studies have shown that glutamate can cause nerve cell death as a result of overstimulation of
the NMDA and AMPA glutamate receptors. This process is known as excitotoxicity and is associated with the
development of some CNS pathologies such as: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, epilepsy
and Huntington's diseases.
This review provides a brief description of the structure of glutamate, its formation, normal and impaired
functioning, glutamate metabolism, its relationship with aspartate, its receptors, inhibitors and transporters. Also,
it is described how glutamate excitotoxicity is generated and its influence on the development of
neurodegenerative diseases.
PALABRAS CLAVE: Glutamato, AMPA, excitotoxicidad, neurotransmisor, Inhibidores.
