ABSTRACT
Gluconeogenesis is a process that is part of the anabolic metabolism, in which the biosynthesis of glucose can
be carried out, starting from precursors that are not carbohydrates, such as glycerol, some amino acids, lactate,
among others; On the other hand, diabetes is a disease characterized by a constant clinical picture of
hyperglycemia, due to the alteration of the hormonal secretion of the pancreas and the degeneration of the
glucose transporters present in the plasma membrane of the cells. One of the main causes of this hyperglycemia
is the increase in the rate of gluconeogenesis; however, from the physiological point of view, it is not known
why this process is increased during diabetes, which is why many investigations have tried to explain this fact,
comparing the rate of gluconeogenesis, together with the rate of hormonal secretion of the pancreas, in patients
with diabetes and in patients without diabetes; where it was found that the increase in gluconeogenesis in
patients with diabetes was largely due to the increase in the glucagon section, possibly caused by the
insensitivity of the alpha cells of the pancreas to paracrine inhibition during hyperglycemia.
