ABSTRACT
Anemia is defined as a decrease in the number of red blood cells (or red blood cells) in the blood
or in the hemoglobin levels compared to normal values. The main function of red blood cells is the
transport of oxygen in the blood and its release in the different tissues. Oxygen is transported
within the red blood cell bound to hemoglobin.
Anemia can be the manifestation of a hematological disease such as sickle cell disease and
thalassemia where it results from the alteration of the genetic structure of the protein or a
secondary manifestation to other diseases such as HIV / AIDS in which the main alteration is due
to the virus affects hematopoietic cells and those that have the CD4 marker; and COVID-19 where
it is believed that it occurs in part due to an intrinsic factor of the disease that causes the release of
iron from erythrocytes, thus causing inflammation and a natural response of the body where limits
the amount of circulating iron to avoid its use by pathogens.
