RESUMEN
El edema cerebral se define como la acumulación anormal de líquido en los diferentes espacios
fisiológicos del cerebro siendo el causante de síntomas y génesis de cuadros clínicos agudos y
severos que si no se tratan de manera adecuada pueden llevar a la muerte. De esta manera el
principal objetivo de esta revisión bibliográfica es entender la relación y aplicar los conceptos
bioquímicos en patologías tales como el edema cerebral, en donde la modificación de los
compartimientos corporales de líquidos se ven desequilibrados. La revisión se basó en
encontrar las bases y aspectos más importantes tratados para el entendimiento del proceso
fisiopatológico del edema cerebral, como la función que juega la barrera hematoencefálica y
los mediadores del edema cerebral. De esta forma podemos concluir que la clasificación del
edema cerebral depende del proceso fisiológico que se afecte. Además se demostró la
importancia de tomar en cuenta el uso de los métodos diagnósticos para el edema cerebral
como el uso de la resonancia magnética que resulta ser más efectiva ya que da una imagen más
clara de la localización y prolongación del edema cerebral. Por último, se comprobó que los
compartimentos cerebrales son muy sensibles y una alteración como el edema y su
prolongación sin tratamiento llevaría a la muerte, indicando que se debe identificar de manera
precisa el tipo de edema para hacer un tratamiento e intervención efectiva para estabilizar al
paciente.
ABSTRACT
Cerebral edema is defined as the abnormal accumulation of fluid in the different physiological
spaces of the brain being the cause of symptoms and genesis of acute and severe clinical pictures
that if not treated properly can lead to death. Thus, the main objective of this literature review is to
understand the relationship and apply biochemical concepts in pathologies such as cerebral edema,
where the modification of body fluid compartments are unbalanced. The research was based on
finding the most important bases and aspects treated for the understanding of the
pathophysiological process of cerebral edema, such as the role played by the blood-brain barrier
and the mediators of cerebral edema. There fore, we can conclude that the classification of cerebral
edema depends on the physiological process that is affected. In addition, the importance of taking
into account the use of diagnostic methods for cerebral edema was demonstrated, such as the use
of magnetic resonance imaging, which is more effective since it gives a clearer image of the
location and prolongation of cerebral edema. Finally, it was proved that the cerebral compartments
are very sensitive and an alteration such as edema and its prolongation without treatment would
lead to death, indicating that the type of edema must be precisely identified in order to make an
effective treatment and intervention to stabilize the patient.
