Am Columbus Cruise Center ist die Passagierschifffahrt in<br />
Bremerhaven seit Jahrzehnten zu Hause. Aus der einstigen<br />
„Kaje der Tränen“ hat sich bis heute einer der wichtigsten<br />
deutschen Kreuzfahrthäfen entwickelt.<br />

Vielleicht war es nicht das typische Wetter für einen Urlaub<br />
auf See. Denn als die Kreuzfahrtsaison <strong>2019</strong> am Columbus<br />
Cruise Center Bremerhaven (CCCB) begann, reichten die<br />
Außentemperaturen knapp über den Gefrierpunkt. Freunden<br />
und Fans der Passagierschifffahrt wurde dennoch warm<br />
ums Herz. Schließlich feierte der schwimmende Premierengast<br />
selbst Premiere: Mit der „Mein Schiff 2“ kam Anfang des<br />
Jahres das jüngste deutsche Kreuzfahrtschiff an die Weser –<br />
und das auch noch, bevor der 315 Meter lange Neubau zu<br />
seiner Taufreise nach Lissabon und der anschließenden offiziellen<br />
Jungfernfahrt startete. Dass TUI Cruises das neueste<br />
Schiff der Flotte in Bremerhaven in Betrieb nahm, „ist sicherlich<br />
auch eine Anerkennung unserer Arbeit hier auf dem<br />
Terminal“, freut sich CCCB-Geschäftsführer Veit Hürdler. Im<br />
Jahr 2018 haben sämtliche deutschen Reisen der Flotte des<br />
Hamburger Kreuzfahrtanbieters TUI Cruises in Bremerhaven<br />
begonnen – die Abläufe bei der Betreuung der Passagiere<br />
und der Abfertigung der Schiffe müssen TUI Cruises be -<br />
eindruckt haben. Das scheint auch bei anderen Reedereien<br />
so zu sein, schließlich verzeichnet der moderne und zugleich<br />
traditionsreiche Terminal jährlich Zuwachsraten im zwei -<br />
stelligen Prozentbereich. Allein von 2018 auf <strong>2019</strong> lag das Plus<br />
im Passagierbereich bei 40 Prozent. Mit 115 angemeldeten<br />
Schiffen verzeichnet der Terminal für <strong>2019</strong> einen neuen<br />
Rekord.<br />
Die Passagierschifffahrt hat die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung<br />
Bremerhavens so stark geprägt wie kaum eine andere<br />
Branche. Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde die damals noch<br />
junge Stadt einer der wichtigsten Auswandererhäfen des<br />
Kontinents. Mehr als acht Millionen Menschen brachen von<br />
hier aus in die Neue Welt auf. Bis in die Mitte des 20. Jahr -<br />
hunderts war die zwischenzeitlich immer wieder moder -<br />

Centre Bremerhaven (CCCB), the outside temperatures were<br />
only just above freezing. But it was still an occasion to warm<br />
the hearts of cruising friends and fans. After all, this was a<br />
premiere for the floating VIP: at the start of the year, Ger -<br />
many’s youngest cruise ship “Mein Schiff 2” came to Bremerhaven,<br />
even before the 315 metres long new-build set off to<br />
Lisbon for its naming ceremony, followed by its official<br />
maiden voyage. For CCCB CEO Veit Hürdler, the fact that TUI<br />
Cruises commissioned the latest ship in its fleet in Bremerhaven<br />
“is a definite acknowledgement of our work here at<br />
the terminal”. In 2018, all German cruises by the fleet of the<br />
Hamburg cruise operator TUI Cruises began in Bremerhaven,<br />
where the processes involved in looking after the passengers<br />
and handling the ships seem to have impressed TUI Cruises.<br />
Other cruise companies would appear to agree: after all, the<br />
modern terminal with its long history is currently enjoying<br />
double-figure growth rates, with passenger handling in -<br />
creasing by 40 percent from 2018 to <strong>2019</strong> alone. The terminal<br />
is setting a new record for <strong>2019</strong> with 115 ships expected.<br />
Passenger shipping has shaped the economic development<br />
of Bremerhaven more than almost any other sector. In the<br />
mid 19th century, the still young city was one of the most<br />
important emigration ports on the continent. More than<br />
eight million people set off for the New World from here. By<br />
the mid 20th century, the constantly upgraded passenger<br />
facility, called the Columbus terminal, was the start and<br />
destination for the most important route between Germany<br />
and the USA. History was written at the “quay of tears”, which<br />
is still how locals describe the Columbus quay. After the war,<br />
