Hellmann Worldwide Logistics Road & Rail.
Electromobility is playing an increasing role for transportation
– on both land and water. Companies in Bremen are
working at sustainable solutions for transporting goods.
What will mobility look like in future? In the context of climate
change, finite fossil fuels, congested city centres and growing
public awareness for sustainable solutions, this is a question
that is currently the subject of particularly intensive debate
in science and society. The logistics sector and the maritime
industry are also working at new concepts for energyefficient
low-emission services. After more than two years of
preparations, a consortium of various project partners in
Bremen has produced an innovative city logistics concept
called “Urban-BRE” with a focus on electric delivery vehicles,
receiving public funding for practical implementation since
early 2019.
The idea is to pool the flow of goods from the freight village
into the city centre where electric cargo bikes take over lastmile
distribution. This makes it possible to increase capacity
utilisation of delivery vehicles from the freight village, re -
lieving the pressure on Bremen’s streets and also protecting
the environment. “As a forwarding company, our objective is
to ensure trucks are as full as possible when they head for the
city”, explains Kai Hasenpusch, CCO at Hellmann Worldwide
Logistics Road & Rail. “This makes both economical and
ecological sense. We want to elaborate a seminal solution for
the future with E-mobility playing a key role, and have therefore
made this one of the core elements in our city logistics
concept.” The plans therefore also include Hellmann pro -
curing four to seven electric trucks that will bring parcels and
pallets into the city as a first step in this direction.
Efficient use of transport vehicles
In detail, this entails cooperation between Hellmann and its
neighbouring parcel service DPD together with other in -
terested companies in the freight village in order to pool their
deliveries into Bremen city centre, using electric trucks
