Timeless Rapture: Inspired Verse from the Shangpa Masters

Develop devotion [toward your master,
Who] is never joined to nor separated from you.
I have attained a free and fully endowed human life,
I have met Buddhism in general,
I have received tantric instruction in particular,
And, especially, [I have gained instruction
In] the profound meaning of this awareness—
Signs that I previously cultivated a little merit.
My mind has turned a little toward the Teachings,
A qualified spiritual master nurtures me,
I have gained certainty in Buddha’s discourses and tantras,
And at present I have no biased anger or desire—
These mean that I will be happy wherever I live.
I care not for this life’s deceptive happiness,
Nor for praises and pleasant-sounding flattery;
And I haven’t aspired to power or influence—
These mean that my mind is always at ease.
To become a spiritual person, I renounced three things:
Worldly, outer pretense of spirituality,
Pleasant speech voiced with negative intent,
And helping others with the aim of my own profit.
This as well is due to my spiritual master’s kindness.
Master, I pray to you again:
Compassionate one, please bless me.
Lord, by your compassionate blessings,
Now and at all places and times
May all circumstances be perfectly auspicious.
