could remove hindrances in this life, and obtain enlightenment in
the next. Dorjé Denpa imparted to him the meditation mantra of
the Great Merciful One, and (to stress its secret nature) he introduced
a bamboo tube into his ear, and through it repeated “Om
mani padmé hum.” He thought in himself: “This mantra is
repeated throughout Tibet by all old men, women, and even children.
This doctrine seems to be a common one.” The teacher perceived
(his doubts) and gave him back the gold. (p. 1027, round
brackets in the original)
At that point, Marpa the Translator intervened and advised La-tö Marpo
to return to Dorjé Denpa and make amends for his initial lack of receptivity.
This he did and gained accomplishment in meditation, although
he remained a troublesome student. Therefore, when Kyungpo Naljor
meets Dorjé Denpa, the Indian master’s first comments concerning
Tibetans’ foibles are probably founded in his own teaching experience
rather than in clairvoyance.
The Melody of Self-Arising:
A Supplication to the Great Master Dorjé Denpa
Like the sun, you dispel darkness from beings’ intellects;
Like the moon, you bring the circles of love and knowledge to
fullness.
Lord of Shakyamuni’s doctrine, Dorjé Denpa,
Venerable Punyakara, to you I pray.
