54 Timeless Rapture
Don’t renounce your distractions;
When you know them to be your multifaceted mind,
They arise as an aid, like grass in a forest fire.
Don’t go into retreat; don’t post a list [of those who can enter].
To stop talking is the best retreat.
Relax, like a tuft of cotton wool.
Give up doing; don’t focus your mind.
Don’t restrain your consciousness—let it go.
If you become dull or agitated, look directly at it.
Gradually give up acts that harm your mind.
If anger or desire arises, know it to be demons.
Mind left uncontrived is the Buddha.
At all times—walking, lying down, or sitting—relax.
The root of all discursive thought is the mind.
When there is no mind, there is no thought.
As soon as a support for spontaneous presence arises,
No anger or desire can possibly arise in the meditator.
Therefore, a realized meditator’s mind is very happy.
As soon as the path without reference points is found,
No partiality can possibly arise in the meditator.
The experience of impartial consciousness is very joyful.
As soon as the uncontrived stream is born,
No judgment can possibly arise in the meditator.
Not to affirm or deny, accept or reject, is exhilarating.
As soon as the mind of awakening of equanimity is born,
No self or other can possibly arise in the meditator.
When self and others are equal, this is true equanimity.
