undertaking all activity out of compassion. [Second,] concentrate
continually and intensely on impermanence and
death to the point that your preoccupations diminish and
you feel you need nothing whatsoever. [Third,] pray wholeheartedly
to your spiritual master so that extraordinary devotion
wells up within you. Develop this unceasing devotion
to your spiritual master to the point of sincerely crying.
These three points will cause spontaneous awareness of the
illusory nature of phenomena; all appearances to seem unreal;
spontaneous lucid dreams, during which you can act freely,
replicate appearances, emanate forms, transform appearances,
or actually discern a specific place; the arising of the clear,
nondiscursive state of Great Seal during the day; and the
spontaneous appearance of yourself as the deity or the arising
of boundless radiant awareness during the night. All of these
experiences will arise exactly as they are described [in meditation
texts].
If you have not developed the three points mentioned
above, it will be difficult for you to achieve the ultimate
results of [tantric] meditation even by intense experiential
cultivation over a long period of time. Therefore it is essential
to cultivate them firmly and wholeheartedly.
In this and other teachings Sangyé Nyentön stressed these three
points—compassion, impermanence, and devotion—and
explained why it is indispensable to always keep them in mind.
Further, he wrote:
Cultivate your spiritual life following these oral instructions:
An altruistic attitude and compassion produce all-embracing
benefit for others.
Supplications make unbounded meditative experience and
realization arise.
Single-minded directed intent results in rapid refinement of lucid
dreams.
Intensive mantra practice leads to the attainment of boundless
accomplishment.
