The Shangpa Masters and Their Lineage 333 May I attain your secret treasury, accomplish impartial tantric conduct, And attain enlightenment in the play of union’s great bliss. May I always do what pleases you, noble master; May your blessings enter my stream of being; And, inseparable from you, May my infinite enlightened activity fill the world with glorious, auspicious illumination. I composed this supplement to the supplication to [Taranata’s] life of freedom, The Wish-Fulfilling Tree of Faith, because previous holy individuals’ works were either too extensive or too short, or the stream of their reading transmission is no longer extant. Therefore, for myself and others, I, Karma Ngawang Yönten Gyatso, wrote this supplication of faith at Palpung Monastery’s secluded retreat center. May excellent virtue increase!
TARANATA, THE SEQUEL Buddhists who enter the main Shangpa tradition find themselves most often guided in their meditations by Taranata’s words. Many of the lineage’s other texts written by Jamgon Kongtrul contain high praises of this sixteenth-seventeenth-century master. Shangpa adepts remember the anniversary of Taranata’s death, the twenty-sixth day of the second lunar month, with offerings to his memory on a par with those made on the fourteenth day of the ninth lunar month, Kyungpo Naljor’s death anniversary. In fact, Jamgon Kongtrul had his three-year retreat center celebrate the memory of Taranata for three days each year, the only master to be so extravagantly honored. To most modern Shangpa meditators, this might seem like a normal lineage love-fest, and to a point they would be correct in that assumption. Yet there is much more to Taranata’s story and his place in Tibetan history, information that casts a different light on Tibet, Taranata, and Jamgon Kongtrul. Taranata was an immense figure during his day, a great lama given ample recognition from a very early age. In a country intent upon Buddhist scholasticism and meditation, he fulfilled the aspirations of his people for a realized and articulate spiritual leader. Although he was bluntly outspoken in his opinions, he used his acidic tongue to point out the folly of those whose Buddhism was halfhearted, compromised by worldly ambitions. He was well positioned by his status as a reincarnate lama, by his brilliance, and by his role as head of the Jonang school of monasteries to become powerful politically, but this was against his reading of Buddha’s word. He seems the perfect lama. Nevertheless, after his death he became the perfect villain, portrayed as a terrible shadow that fell upon Tibet and threatened the entire country’s spiritual life. Few individuals in Tibetan history have been as reviled and suppressed as Taranata. This obviously bears some explanation. 334
