GLOSSARY
The following lists—of personal names; names of buddhas,
deities, meditation practices, and lineages; and place names—are
included to help those who might need to navigate the swelling seas of
books on the subjects of Tibetan and Buddhist culture. Beside the name
as it appears in the book, you will find in brackets the name as it appeared
in the Tibetan text, rendered in the Wylie system. (Names mentioned in
the foreword, preface, and additional material appear here in their most
common rendering.)
As long as a commonly accepted transliteration scheme from Tibetan
(Lhasa dialect pronunciation? Khampa dialect? Amdo?) to English (American?
British? Australian?) eludes us, these lists will remain a feature of
books translated from Tibetan. As for Wylie itself, even that useful tool
comes in more than one version: readers may have noticed that E. Gene
Smith writes “Bka’ brgyud” while Matthew Kapstein prefers “bKa’brgyud.”
The lists below feature another option, without hyphens or capital
letters: Kagyu would be written bka’ brgyud.
