Timeless Rapture: Inspired Verse from the Shangpa Masters

This great bliss in the conduct of impartial taste
Can be smothered by the demons of the eight worldly concerns.
This pure land of the conquerors, your own body,
Can be lost when given ordinary work.
In the meditator’s happy state,
The six senses’ appearances arise as an aid.
Since I have no fear of either existence or transcendence,
I consider my own mind to be a monarch.
This sovereign who has realized his own mind
Owns the ornaments of the seven precious possessions.
I didn’t pursue intellectual knowledge;
I felt devotion toward the profound meaning.
Certainty rose from the depths of my mind—
That’s the precious minister’s best advice.
The holy spiritual master himself
Spoke the profound teachings.
“Resolve your misunderstandings of the tantras and transmissions
In the lineage of noble Naropa’s children,” he said.
I gathered all the major pith instructions
And cut the root of existence and transcendence.
Ignorance vanished into the unborn state;
The precious supreme horse carried the five poisons to the absolute
expanse.
Since all busyness where many gather
Amounts to distraction, I remain in retreat.
Making a basis of both creation and completion,
I train in my own mind’s display.
Like a young garuda who soars in space,
Wherever I go is the precious wheel.
The six senses’ appearances have suddenly vanished,
And in this I am content.
