This subtle contemplative practice produces clairvoyance.<br />

You will realize <strong>the</strong> nondual state.<br />

The nature of joy will arise,<br />

And you will attain <strong>the</strong> result, equanimity.<br />

Some dwell in meditation on <strong>the</strong> four deities;<br />

Some rely on verbal recitations.<br />

They do not know nondual meditation.<br />

These oral teachings given for o<strong>the</strong>rs’ benefit<br />

Come <strong>from</strong> a lineage passed <strong>from</strong> face to face<br />

And have been taught here by Rahula.<br />

Rahula-gupta, who accomplished immortality, followed <strong>the</strong> predictions<br />

of his accomplished spiritual masters and left <strong>the</strong> sublime land of India at<br />

dawn. He traveled to Tibet by means of his miraculous powers and arrived<br />

at daybreak at Penyul Jokpo, <strong>the</strong> retreat place of <strong>the</strong> learned and accomplished<br />

Kyungpo Naljor. Rahula displayed some miracles and stayed for<br />

eleven months, during which he gave various instructions, both common<br />

and extraordinary. At <strong>the</strong> time of Rahula’s return to India, Lama <strong>Shangpa</strong><br />

accompanied him as far as Mangyul, where Rahula gave his disciple <strong>the</strong>se<br />

oral instructions in six-syllable vajra verses:<br />

The root of suffering<br />

Is clinging to a self.<br />
