TARANATA Shangpa meditators recite lineage prayers that begin with Buddha Vajra Bearer, continue through an unbroken line of masters, and end with their personal spiritual master. Each of the names recited indicates an essential link in the chain of transmission, a realized master who received and realized Niguma’s teachings and passed them to the next generation. Meditators who do not study the masters’ life stories will probably become familiar with only four names: Kyungpo Naljor, Tangtong Gyalpo, Jamgon Kongtrul, and Taranata (1575–1634). Kyungpo Naljor was, of course, the source lama of the lineage; the other three composed most of the empowerments, rituals, liturgies, and commentaries used today in the Shangpa tradition. Of them, Taranata is clearly the dominant figure; Jamgon Kongtrul, who lived two centuries later, was an unabashed Taranata fan who took any opportunity he could to praise this lama who inspired him. This compendium of songs provides ample evidence of this: only the section on Kyungpo Naljor occupies more space, although other teachers, such as Tangtong Gyalpo, were as prolific as Taranata in songs of realization. Further, the lines Kongtrul wrote in the main text in Part 1 to introduce Taranata bear rereading: During this age of conflict, Taranata was a great Buddha Vajra Bearer whose renunciation and realization were indistinguishable from those of Land of the Exalted’s accomplished masters. In the Tibetan world, this was the highest possible praise. Each time the subject turned to Taranata, Kongtrul heaped on comparable superlatives to underline his undivided respect and devotion. In the compendium Treasury of Profound Instructions, Kongtrul includes works by Taranata in five of that compilation’s eight categories. Among them, the two Shangpa volumes are almost entirely the work of Taranata and Jamgon Kongtrul; 320
