The biblical stories <strong>of</strong> Rachel’s and Leah’s descendants indicate a strong rivalry<br />

between <strong>the</strong> two factions. The Song <strong>of</strong> Deborah s<strong>how</strong>s that with <strong>the</strong> exception <strong>of</strong><br />

Reuben <strong>the</strong> main Leah branch (Simeon, Levi, and Judah) had not come into existence<br />

until long after Israel settled into Canaan. The Rachel branch exhibits several connections<br />

to Egypt.<br />

These bits <strong>of</strong> evidence suggest that <strong>the</strong> original Exodus group must have been primarily<br />

a Rachel faction and that <strong>the</strong> Leah grouping didn’t fully emerge as a political<br />

entity until long after <strong>the</strong> Exodus. Later <strong>scribes</strong> created <strong>the</strong> mythological Jacob family<br />

as an attempt to give <strong>the</strong> various factions a common history.
