Myths of the Heroes 191 Solomon imposed a system of slave labor, but the biblical texts disagree as to whether the slaves were Israelite or non-Israelite. Archaeologists have yet to find any remains of Solomon’s temple. Nor does a shred of contemporaneous evidence or documentation attesting to the existence of Solomon or of his empire exist in any writings from within Israel or any of the nations that Solomon supposedly ruled. From the Exodus of Moses to the rise of David and Solomon, one of the key icons in biblical history was the Ark of the Covenant. Surmounted by two golden cherubim and built to hold the Ten Commandments, it served as a throne for God. This ark had magic powers and served to aid Israel against its enemies as long as Israel remained righteous. When Israel abandoned the Lord, the Ark failed to protect them. After the fall of the united monarchy, the Bible no longer mentions its presence. No passages say that it had disappeared or had been destroyed or had been captured by enemies. It simply vanishes from biblical history. Ethiopian tradition holds that a son of Solomon by the Queen of Sheba took the Ark to Ethiopia. After Solomon’s death, Jeroboam of Ephraim led a revolt against Rehoboam of Judah, Solomon’s son and designated heir. The kingdom split in two, Israel in the north and Judah in the south. The chief symbols of Jeroboam’s kingdom were two golden calves, one placed in the southern end of Israel in Beth-el and the other placed in the northern end of Israel in Dan. These two golden calves served the same function as the Ark of the Covenant, which had remained in Judah. They formed a throne for God. Whereas the Ark of the Covenant, God’s Judahite throne, was just a large box that resided within the temple at Jerusalem, the golden calves, God’s Israelite throne, straddled the entire Israelite kingdom and excluded Judah. Such distinctions helped define religious and political differences between the two rival kingdoms. While Jeroboam initially had the support of the northern priesthood in his campaign against Judah, when he became king of Israel he angered the priests by declaring that anybody who wanted could become a priest. This became another source of political and religious turmoil that found its expression in biblical writings. In 722 B.C., the Assyrians captured the Northern Kingdom of Israel and it ceased to exist. Judah remained, but in 587 B.C. it was conquered by the Chaldaeans of Baby-
192 101 Myths of the Bible lonian and the Hebrew elite were transported from Canaan to the Chaldaean capital. A few decades later, Cyrus of Persia defeated the Chaldaeans and allowed the Hebrew leaders to return to Judah. Several of the later books in the Bible, such as Daniel and Esther, tell of Hebrew experiences while living in foreign countries. In many of these later stories, the heroes face great tests of faith and by remaining true to God they not only survive adversity but rise to positions of political power.
