ometime after Joseph died, a king who “knew not Joseph” came to the Egyptian
throne. He observed that the House of Israel had grown“more and mightier” than the
Egyptians, and said:
Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that,
when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us,
and so get them up out of the land. (Exod. 1:10)
At first, the pharaoh tried to control their numbers by subjecting them to extreme
physical hardship, but Hebrew ranks still continued to swell. He then adopted a policy
of male infanticide, ordering the Hebrew midwives,“[I]f it be a son, then ye shall
kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live” (Exod. 1:16).
At about the time this order went out, a Hebrew woman named Jochebed became
pregnant with the infant later called Moses. After the baby’s birth, she kept him hidden
for three months, but when she could no longer keep him safe, she trusted to God
and placed the child in a small ark and let it loose into the Nile.
Jochebed’s daughter, Miriam, followed the ark and watched as it drifted towards a
lagoon where the pharaoh’s daughter bathed. The princess saw the ark in the water,
rescued the little boy, and, when she saw that it was one of the Hebrews, she felt compassion.
Miriam saw her reaction and approached the royal daughter to ask if she
wanted one of the Hebrew women to nurse the child. The princess agreed and Miriam
