AN OVERVIEW<br />

ometime after Joseph died, a king who “knew not Joseph” came to <strong>the</strong> Egyptian<br />

throne. He observed that <strong>the</strong> House <strong>of</strong> Israel had grown“more and mightier” than <strong>the</strong><br />

Egyptians, and said:<br />

Come on, let us deal wisely with <strong>the</strong>m; lest <strong>the</strong>y multiply, and it come to pass, that,<br />

when <strong>the</strong>re falleth out any war, <strong>the</strong>y join also unto our enemies, and fight against us,<br />

and so get <strong>the</strong>m up out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> land. (Exod. 1:10)<br />

At first, <strong>the</strong> pharaoh tried to control <strong>the</strong>ir numbers by subjecting <strong>the</strong>m to extreme<br />

physical hardship, but Hebrew ranks still continued to swell. He <strong>the</strong>n adopted a policy<br />

<strong>of</strong> male infanticide, ordering <strong>the</strong> Hebrew midwives,“[I]f it be a son, <strong>the</strong>n ye shall<br />

kill him: but if it be a daughter, <strong>the</strong>n she shall live” (Exod. 1:16).<br />

At about <strong>the</strong> time this order went out, a Hebrew woman named Jochebed became<br />

pregnant with <strong>the</strong> infant later called Moses. After <strong>the</strong> baby’s birth, she kept him hidden<br />

for three months, but when she could no longer keep him safe, she trusted to God<br />

and placed <strong>the</strong> child in a small ark and let it loose into <strong>the</strong> Nile.<br />

Jochebed’s daughter, Miriam, followed <strong>the</strong> ark and watched as it drifted towards a<br />

lagoon where <strong>the</strong> pharaoh’s daughter ba<strong>the</strong>d. The princess saw <strong>the</strong> ark in <strong>the</strong> water,<br />

rescued <strong>the</strong> little boy, and, when she saw that it was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hebrews, she felt compassion.<br />

Miriam saw her reaction and approached <strong>the</strong> royal daughter to ask if she<br />

wanted one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hebrew women to nurse <strong>the</strong> child. The princess agreed and Miriam
