30 <strong>101</strong> <strong>Myths</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Bible</strong><br />

While this passage tells us precisely when this man appeared, most people who<br />

read it ignore <strong>the</strong> meaning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> text. This man appeared “in <strong>the</strong> day that <strong>the</strong> LORD God<br />

made <strong>the</strong> earth and <strong>the</strong> heavens” and before <strong>the</strong>re was any vegetation on <strong>the</strong> earth. When<br />

exactly was that?<br />

In <strong>the</strong> present version <strong>of</strong> Genesis, this occurred sometime on <strong>the</strong> third day <strong>of</strong> Creation.<br />

According to Genesis 1:6–13, God created <strong>the</strong> heavens on <strong>the</strong> second day and <strong>the</strong><br />

earth and vegetation on <strong>the</strong> third day. This places <strong>the</strong> creation <strong>of</strong> Adam in <strong>the</strong> middle <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> third day, after <strong>the</strong> creation <strong>of</strong> heaven and earth and before vegetation. (Later, in <strong>the</strong><br />

discussion <strong>of</strong> Myth #14, we will see that heaven was originally created on <strong>the</strong> second day,<br />

and that is <strong>the</strong> day that Adam appeared.) So, if Adam first appeared on <strong>the</strong> third (or second)<br />

day <strong>of</strong> Creation, he <strong>the</strong>refore cannot be <strong>the</strong> man created on <strong>the</strong> sixth day.<br />

But what about Eve? After <strong>the</strong> creation <strong>of</strong> Adam, <strong>the</strong> story shifts to events in <strong>the</strong><br />

Garden <strong>of</strong> Eden. We learn about <strong>the</strong> planting <strong>of</strong> trees, especially <strong>the</strong> Trees <strong>of</strong> Knowledge<br />

<strong>of</strong> Good and Evil and The Tree <strong>of</strong> Life, and we learn some geographical details<br />

about <strong>the</strong> Garden, but nothing yet about a woman. Then:<br />

And <strong>the</strong> LORD God said, It is not good that <strong>the</strong> man should be alone; I will make<br />

him an help meet for him. And out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ground <strong>the</strong> LORD God formed every<br />

beast <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> field, and every fowl <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> air; and brought <strong>the</strong>m unto Adam to see<br />

what he would call <strong>the</strong>m: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that<br />

was <strong>the</strong> name <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong>. And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to <strong>the</strong> fowl <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> air,<br />

and to every beast <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> field; but for Adam <strong>the</strong>re was not found an help meet for<br />

him. (Gen. 2:18–19)<br />

The beasts and birds didn’t end Adam’s loneliness. The man was still lonely. Man<br />

needed ano<strong>the</strong>r“help meet” and God set about to remedy <strong>the</strong> situation.<br />

And <strong>the</strong> LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he<br />

took one <strong>of</strong> his ribs, and closed up <strong>the</strong> flesh instead <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong>; And <strong>the</strong> rib, which <strong>the</strong><br />

LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto <strong>the</strong><br />

man. (Gen. 2:21–22)<br />

In <strong>the</strong> earlier account, God created <strong>the</strong> man and woman simultaneously on <strong>the</strong><br />

sixth day, both after <strong>the</strong> appearance <strong>of</strong> vegetation and animals. But in <strong>the</strong> story <strong>of</strong>
