In honor <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Society</strong>’s 50th Anniversary, a number <strong>of</strong> celebration activities, events, and programs have been developed<br />

by the various Committees, Regional Chapters, Special Interest Groups, Specialty Sections, and Task Forces. Please take<br />

a moment to visit the 50th Anniversary Web site to view full descriptions <strong>of</strong> all the 50th Anniversary events and activities.<br />

All events will be held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center unless otherwise noted.<br />

50th Anniversary Member<br />

Celebration Meeting<br />

Tuesday, March 8, 4:30 PM–6:00 PM<br />

All members are invited to celebrate the<br />

<strong>Society</strong>’s first 50 years <strong>of</strong> accomplishments.<br />

This fun event will highlight the history and<br />

growth <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Society</strong> over the past 50 years<br />

recognizing the members who are responsible<br />

for the <strong>Society</strong>’s success. Come see what is<br />

going in the Time Capsule that will be opened<br />

in 2036 by current and future SOT members.<br />

The First Fifty Years.<br />

50th Anniversary Book<br />

SOT is publishing a deluxe publication, The<br />

<strong>Society</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Toxicology</strong>: The First Fifty Years,<br />

which features the many significant events and<br />

people who have helped move the toxicology<br />

field to where it is today. The historical articles<br />

and photographs that make up the book are<br />

priceless. Please visit the SOT 50th Anniversary<br />

Web site to view the table <strong>of</strong> contents and to<br />

get an idea <strong>of</strong> materials collected so far. <strong>Society</strong><br />

members who attend the 50th Anniversary<br />

Members Celebration on Tuesday, March 8,<br />

will receive a complimentary copy <strong>of</strong> the book<br />

(see previous listing). In addition, the book can<br />

be picked up at the SOT Registration Area on<br />

Wednesday, March 9. All members will be able<br />

to download the book from the SOT Web site<br />

after the Annual Meeting.<br />

Awards Ceremony<br />

Sunday, March 6, 5:15 PM–6:30 PM<br />

SOT will recognize our prestigious award<br />

recipients at the SOT Awards Ceremony<br />

(pages 63–71). Please refer to the Awards and<br />

Fellowships section <strong>of</strong> the SOT Web site for<br />

complete details about the award recipients<br />

and criteria. In commemoration <strong>of</strong> the 50th<br />

Anniversary, two individuals who have significantly<br />

and positively influenced the fields<br />

<strong>of</strong> toxicology will be inducted as Honorary<br />

Members: William C. Hays, Esq. and Dr.<br />

Frances Kathleen Oldham Kelsey.<br />

Benchmarks in <strong>Toxicology</strong> Banner<br />

SOT and the National Institute <strong>of</strong><br />

Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) will<br />

showcase the winning benchmarks on a huge<br />

banner that will be displayed prominently at<br />

the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.<br />

In addition, a Benchmarks poster will be<br />

distributed to attendees and will also appear<br />

on the SOT Web site.<br />

Celebration Event<br />

Come celebrate the 50th Anniversary in style.<br />

Dance the night away with tunes from the<br />

Beatles as performed by BeatleMania Live.<br />

Dress in your favorite decade’s attire (60’s to<br />

the future)! Additional entertainment plans<br />

include festive decorations, games, delicious<br />

food stations, and beverages. This is truly an<br />

event you will not want to miss! Purchase your<br />

ticket now by signing up on the 2011 Annual<br />

Meeting registration form. A limited number<br />

<strong>of</strong> discounted tickets have been set aside for<br />

trainees (undergraduate students, graduate<br />

students, and postdocs). All tickets will be sold<br />

on a first-come, first-served basis and are nonrefundable<br />

after February 11, 2011.<br />

Committee on Diversity<br />

Initiatives Reunion<br />

Saturday, March 5, 8:00 PM–9:00 PM<br />

The Committee on Diversity Initiatives<br />

(CDI) will host the CDI Reunion from<br />

8:00 PM–9:00 PM on Saturday, March 5.<br />

Whether as a student, peer mentor, host<br />

mentor, speaker, or organizer, anyone who has<br />

ever been involved in the SOT Undergraduate<br />

<strong>Program</strong> is invited to attend. Visit with<br />

colleagues who have been involved in the<br />

program over the last 22 years, meet with<br />

program alums, and greet the undergraduate<br />

students who are attending the program this<br />

year. The 2011 Endowment Gehring Diversity<br />

Student Travel Award will be presented. Enjoy<br />

dessert, c<strong>of</strong>fee, and tea. Start <strong>of</strong>f your 50th<br />

Anniversary meeting celebration by joining<br />

with the special people who have contributed<br />

to the diversity in SOT through this important<br />

activity.<br />

Commemorative Posters<br />

A picture says it all! SOT has created a<br />

series <strong>of</strong> posters highlighting important<br />

aspects <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Society</strong> and the science. Please<br />

visit the SOT Web site to view the latest<br />

posters. The posters will also be on display<br />

from Sunday, March 6, to Wednesday,<br />

March 9, in the pre-function space outside<br />

the Exhibit Hall at the Walter E. Washington<br />

Convention Center.<br />

Decades Keepsake Brochure—<br />

Fifty Years <strong>of</strong> Impact<br />

Get a snapshot <strong>of</strong> the past 50 years. This<br />

colorful brochure features short summaries by<br />

decade <strong>of</strong> global history, along with brief writeups<br />

about major toxicological innovations.<br />

Each attendee to the 2011 Annual Meeting will<br />

want to get their copy to enjoy and save until<br />

the next major SOT anniversary. The brochure<br />

will also be posted on the SOT Web site after<br />

the Annual Meeting.<br />

SOT 50th Anniversary<br />

Endowment Fund Matching<br />

In honor <strong>of</strong> SOT’s 50th Anniversary, SOT<br />

Council has committed to match $750,000 <strong>of</strong><br />

contributions to the Endowment Fund. Almost<br />

$600,000 in contributions have already been<br />

matched. Help us meet the match with your<br />

contribution. All contributions to the General<br />

Purpose Fund are currently being matched.<br />

Educator Award<br />

The new Endowment Fund Undergraduate<br />

Educator Award is being sponsored by<br />

the Endowment Education Fund and the<br />

Endowment SOT Priorities Fund in honor<br />

<strong>of</strong> the 50th Anniversary and outstanding<br />

undergraduate education. The awardee,<br />

Joan B. Tarl<strong>of</strong>f, will be recognized at the<br />

Sunday, March 6, Awards Ceremony. To learn<br />
