In summary, the c<strong>on</strong>taminants that could be released into aquatic ecosystems in run<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ffrom forest management areas include:• C<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>al variables (TSS);• Nutrients (nitrate, nitrite, amm<strong>on</strong>ia, phosphorus);• Herbicides (glyphosate, triclopyr, picloram, and 2,4-D);• Surfactants (e.g., amphoteric fluorosurfactants, n<strong>on</strong>-i<strong>on</strong>ic fluorosurfactants,ani<strong>on</strong>ic hydrocarb<strong>on</strong> surfactants);• Fire retardants (diamm<strong>on</strong>ium sulphate, diamm<strong>on</strong>ium phosphate, amm<strong>on</strong>iumsulphate, amm<strong>on</strong>ium phosphate, and/or amm<strong>on</strong>ium polyphosphate); and,• Cyanides.3.1.2.2 Run<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f from Agricultural Operati<strong>on</strong>sA diversity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> agricultural activities are practised within the <strong>Fraser</strong> <strong>River</strong> Basin. In thecentral and northern porti<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the watershed (i.e., Nechako <strong>River</strong>, Bowr<strong>on</strong> <strong>River</strong>,Quesnel <strong>River</strong>, Chilko <strong>River</strong>, and North Thomps<strong>on</strong> <strong>River</strong> areas <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> interest), agriculturalactivities are primarily focussed <strong>on</strong> livestock producti<strong>on</strong> (i.e., cattle ranching), withextensive grazing occurring <strong>on</strong> range lands. Intensive livestock producti<strong>on</strong> may also occurin certain areas (e.g., feed lots; chicken farms). In additi<strong>on</strong>, hay producti<strong>on</strong> represents animportant land use in these areas, with multiple crops produced annually <strong>on</strong> irrigatedlands. Water quality c<strong>on</strong>cerns associated with ranching and associated feed producti<strong>on</strong>include:• Producti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> TSS where livestock are permitted access to streams forwatering;• Releases <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> nutrients (nitrate, nitrite, amm<strong>on</strong>ia, phosphorus) associated withfertilizer use or manure spreading;• Releases <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> nutrients and microorganisms from feedlots or when livestock havedirect access to streams; and,• Releases <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticides used in forage crop and hay producti<strong>on</strong>, includingherbicides (e.g., 2,4-D, atrazine, glyphosate), insecticides (e.g., chlorpyrifos,carbaryl), and fungicides (chlorothal<strong>on</strong>il, sulfur; Verrin et al. 2004).36
