Section 4 New Value-Based Security and Personally Identifiable Information Security Using Fine-Grained Access Control - FunctionalOverviewSection 4New Value-Based Security and PersonallyIdentifiable Information Security UsingFine-Grained Access Control - FunctionalThis enhancement is new for Release 7.0.This section provides functional detail about the Student product domains and howto use them in the New Value-Based Security and Personally IdentifiableInformation Security.OverviewThe new Value-Based Security (VBS) using Fine-Grained Access Control (FGAC)provides functionality that replaces existing Value-Based Security processing.Existing Value-Based Security, which was based on secured views, and its relatedobjects are no longer supported with Release 7.0. However, FGAC can be used tosecure a new version of VBS processing if you wish to use it in that capacity. VBS usesexisting columns to secure data, which is appropriate for sets of tables that containsecurity data and for securing small sets of data.Note: Secured views, table triggers, and form triggers have been removed fromthe following modules and replaced with seed data to define domainsand domain tables: Recruiting, Admissions, General Student, test scores,GPA, Catalog, Schedule, and RORSTAT in Banner Financial Aid.While Banner already provides role security and object level security, Fine-GrainedAccess Control is used for controlling row level security. You can restrict which rowsare displayed to a user. Security checking takes place when the rows are accessed.FGAC dynamically modifies an SQL statement in a transparent way to users byadding a condition (WHERE clause) which restricts the rows shown to the user.FGAC security can be defined on a table column in a primary table for predefineddomains in Banner Student. These domains are in the Catalog, Schedule,Recruiting, Admissions, and General Student modules. Test score and transfer GPAdomain information is also controlled within these modules. FGAC can also be usedto secure Personally Identifiable Information (PII).Please refer to the SCT Banner General 7.0 Release Guide for more information on thisenhancement.January 2005 Student Release 7.0Confidential Release Guide 111
