Section 3 Concurrent Curricula Phase I - FunctionalNew ConceptsBackfilling Curriculum DataIn Banner 7.0, the backfill of curriculum information into the existing tablestructures is handled by the new Curriculum API (application programminginterface). The API will update the original curriculum columns so that existingprocesses will continue to function in the same way as in Banner 6.X. The Banner6.X curriculum structure allows for two concurrent active curricula, each with up totwo majors, two minors, and six concentrations, with the exception of Recruiting.Recruiting allows for one curriculum. All Banner 7.0 baseline processes (transcript, enrollment verification, registration restrictions, Web display, NSLC reporting, etc.)will continue to reference curriculum information from the Banner 6.X tables.Although the Banner 7.0 release allows institutions to enter more curricula than willbe backfilled into the existing curriculum fields, SunGard SCT suggests thatinstitutions continue to restrict the number of curriculum records that can be activeconcurrently to just a primary and secondary curriculum.Note: Even if your institution changes the values in SOACTRL to allow morecurricula, majors, minors, and/or concentrations than are currentlyallowed in Banner 6.X, only the number allowed in Banner 6.X will bebackfilled. The backfill only populates fields that existed in Banner 6.X.Non-Destructive UpdatesThe new Curriculum window supports non-destructive updates. The purpose ofnon-destructive updates is to maintain a history of all changes to a learner'scurriculum. For this reason, no updates are allowed to existing curriculum and fieldof study records. The process to update existing curriculum information is toduplicate the existing record and then update the newly created record with theappropriate changes (i.e., to inactivate the record and indicate why it wasinactivated). Then the user must add a new record to represent the learner's newor current curriculum. The user is allowed to delete curriculum and field of studyrecords. Institutions are encouraged to establish a policy on retaining historicalrecords.Attached to Major FieldThe Field of Study block in the Curriculum window contains a field called Attachedto Major. This field is used to identify the major to which a concentration isattached. If a field of study row is being entered, and the Type field has a value ofCONCENTRATION, then the Attached to Major field will be enabled. If curriculumchecking is turned on (using SOACTRL), when the user selects the Search featureon the Attached to Major field, those majors will be displayed:• that have been entered so far in the Field of Study blockand• that the concentration is attached to based on the corresponding curriculumrule.January 2005 Student Release 7.0Confidential Release Guide 45
