Alternative readings and difficult or illegible parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> manuscriptsare indicated in <strong>the</strong> notes to each text.6. The text in <strong>the</strong> modern languages, which are chiefly German andEnglish, has been left without substantive change, save as notedabove. Citations from Greek and Latin authors <strong>of</strong> classical antiquityhave likewise been left in <strong>the</strong>ir original form in <strong>the</strong> text, save wheresubsequent editions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> classical works have proposed changes <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> forms in which Morgan, Maine, or Marx left <strong>the</strong>m. Where <strong>the</strong>matter concerns o<strong>the</strong>r than a formal difference, and where it has somesignificance attached to it, this has been noted, but not in <strong>the</strong> cases<strong>of</strong> mere variations <strong>of</strong> form. These classical citations have likewisebeen translated into English in <strong>the</strong> notes to <strong>the</strong> texts. The citationsand translations have been checked against some standard currentedition, in most cases that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Loeb Classical Library. In <strong>the</strong> case<strong>of</strong> Aristotle <strong>the</strong>y have been checked against <strong>the</strong> edition <strong>of</strong> W. D. Ross.7. References to Marx’s text in <strong>the</strong> Introduction and Notes are by pagenumber, following his sequence in <strong>the</strong> mss., which is indicated on<strong>the</strong> left margin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> page.8. Underlinings, marginal and interpolated lines are reproduced from<strong>the</strong> manuscript ins<strong>of</strong>ar as it is feasible to do so.9. The reproduction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> Marx’s bibliographic notes fromExcerpt Notebook B 146 (see above, Introduction, note 15) isdiscussed in <strong>the</strong> Notes appended to that bibliographic section.10. Spelling <strong>of</strong> words has been left in <strong>the</strong> form that Marx gave, eventhough contemporary practice has since been changed, e.g., Theil,commandirt, Etablirung. Grammatical and syntactic constructionshave been reproduced unchanged, likewise, unless noted o<strong>the</strong>rwise,for <strong>the</strong>se matters concern Marx’s peculiar and characteristic shiftsfrom German to English and vice versa.
