Ryazanov had written (NovyeDannye, l.c. - see notes 6 and 83), “He received Morgan [AncientSociety] in 1878. In 98 pp. of small writing (you should know thatone page of his rapid hand always yields a minimum of 2.2 and morepages of print) a detailed excerption of Morgan was made.” Further,I.e.: “In view of the special significance of these materials I hadphotographs made, as an exception, of the Morgan excerpts and oftwo others - Lubbock and Maine. It is clear from these notebooksthat Marx, in the second half of the 1870s was much occupied withthe history of feudalism and landownership.” The attribution ofMarx’s acquisition of the work by Morgan to the year 1878 has nobearing on the chronology of the notebooks; the scope of the worksin question and Marx’s interest in them goes far beyond the historyof feudalism and of landownership: these were no less than the entireprehistory and history of mankind, the problem of collectivism, thepeasant community in Oriental and Western society, the division ofsociety in social classes, and the formation of the State. They includethe points raised by Ryazanov who was the first to call attention to theextent and the importance of the materials, and to whom we aredeeply indebted.168 Arkhiv Marksa, op. cit., p. iv. This has been read as 1881-1882 byLucas, op. cit., p. 154, but as this reading is erroneous, the (weak)support for the date there adduced (from “Karl Kautsky” , in DieVolkswirtschaftslehre, etc.) is irrelevant.394
