with its landscape and natural climatic conditions. In particular, there are semi-deserts and<br />

dry steppes, as well as mixed forests and alpine zones combined in Kvemo Kartli.<br />

Cultural tourism. The uniqueness of Dmanisi is resulted from its richest historical potential.<br />

The bones of the ancient European man found during the archaeological excavations on<br />

the territory of the ancient town site draw the world’s attention to Dmanisi, and Dmanisi was<br />

included on the list of international tourist routes. Dmanisi houses the remnants of a feudal<br />

fortified town (palaces, bathes and other farming and military buildings), as well as Church<br />

of Dmanisi Sioni. All this treasure is found on the cape between the canyons of two rivers.<br />

Samtskhe-Javakheti region<br />

Owing to its favorable climatic conditions, there are a number of holiday-making sites in<br />

the region. The most famous resorts are Abastumani and Borjomi.<br />

Owing to its special climate, Abastumani is recognized as a unique world resort (good for<br />

the patients with tuberculosis). There are thermal waters flowing in Abastumani used to treat<br />

locomotor apparatus, peripheral nervous system and gynecological diseases. Borjomi is mostly<br />

famous for its resorts (medical and winter resorts). “Borjomi” mineral water has been used as<br />

a cure since the 1840s. Borjomi gorge is known for its curing climatic zone, too.<br />

Bakuriani, a winter resort of Borjomi is located at 1700 m above sea level. The climate<br />

and relief in Bakuriani mean wonderful developmental prospects. Winter is mostly sunny,<br />

with the snow cover reaching 50 cm and surviving from December till April.<br />

In respect of natural monuments, the forest-park of lava plateau in Sadgeri and lakes:<br />

Tabatskuri, Kakhisi, Tsero, etc. are worthwhile. There are routes and infrastructure developed<br />

for eco-tourism in Borjomi-Kharagauli National Forest-Park.<br />

Aspindza region is famous for its resorts and mineral waters. Aspindza itself is a balneal<br />

resort, and its thermal waters are used to treat the chronic diseases of locomotor apparatus,<br />

diseases of peripheral nervous system, rheumatism, and cardiovascular system, chronic gynecologic<br />

and skin diseases.<br />

Shida Kartli region<br />

Eco-tourism: the beautiful nature, natural monuments, gorges, waterfalls and many other<br />

sites in the region support the development of eco-tourism. Out of natural sites, Bateti Lake<br />

(a landslide lake), two lakes in Mokhisi, Bebnisi Lake, Dzama gorge, Trekhva gorge, Prone<br />

gorge, “Trekhvi baths” near village Trekhva (in Kareli region), Nacharmagevi Lake, Nadarbazevi<br />

Lake, Ateni gorge, Danakhvisi, old silk road, Ateni gorge waterfall (in Gori region),<br />

Keli Lake and Kelitsadi Lake (in Akhalgori region), Ustarauli waterfall (in Kaspi region) are<br />

worthwhile.<br />

Imereti region<br />

The karst caves and interesting geomorphologic formations support the development of<br />

rock-climbing and adventure, as well as speleo-tourism. The wonderful nature with its diversified<br />

flora and fauna are good preconditions to develop hiking, horse-riding and eco-tours<br />

in the region. 230 farms were selected in the villages of Imereti to develop agro-tourism.
