of the nation. Manifestation of sub conventional conflicts is being witnessed in<br />

the form of proxy war and insurgency. The <strong>India</strong>n Army is at the forefront in<br />

combating the internal security challenges in conjunction with other security<br />

agencies. The <strong>India</strong>n Army is also exploiting its core competencies in training<br />

the CAPFs and state police forces towards enhancing their operational<br />

employment in combating Left Wing Extremism.<br />

The transportation, logistic and medical infrastructure required for the<br />

Army's pan-<strong>India</strong>n operational deployment, especially in the remote and border<br />

areas, accrue benefits for the local population for humanirarian assistance and<br />

disaster relief. The <strong>India</strong>n Army also contributes to sand dunes, soil and water<br />

conservation. In addition, the <strong>India</strong>n Army Training Teams in 10 countries across<br />

the world continue to play an important role in training and building the armies<br />

of these countries.<br />

Modernisation of the Infantry is being progressed based on five sub system,<br />

i.e. lethality, survivability, mobility, situational awareness and sustainability.<br />

Artillery would be inducting a variety of gun systems to enhance its long range<br />

firepower. Artillery is graduating to an effect based precision targeting capability<br />

and has identified key technologies for development. Army Aviation provides<br />

the fourth dimensional combat support in terms of reconnaissance, surveillance,<br />

direction of artillery fire, support to manoeuvre forces as well as causality<br />

evacuation from the battlefield. The <strong>India</strong>n Army is committed to enhance its<br />

overall effectiveness by revamping its equipment profile and human resource<br />

through the tools of technology and innovations. <strong>India</strong>n Army is one of the<br />

largest troop contributor to UN missions with presence in seven of the current<br />

15 UN missions. It has enhanced its presence by deploying an additional<br />

hospital in Juba, South Sudan and conversion of one Infantry Battalion to Rapid<br />

Deployment Battalion. <strong>India</strong> has also conducted major UN Peacekeeping<br />

Courses for senior mission leaders, female military officers and selected African<br />

partners and has emerged as a leading trainer.<br />

Navy<br />

The raison d'etre of navies is to safeguard the nation's use of seas for its legitimate<br />

sovereign purpose, whilst concurrently guarding against inimical use of the<br />

sea by others. The full range of operations in which the naval forces may be<br />

involved is vast, ranging from high intensity war fighting at one end and<br />

humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations at the other end. This<br />

broad continuum of operations can be broken down into distinct roles at each<br />

demanding a specific approach to the conduct of operations. Through the<br />

discharge of roles, the <strong>India</strong>n Navy (IN) acts as the prime enabler and guarantor<br />

of the country's maritime sovereignty and myriad use of sea activities.<br />

Accordingly, the main roles that IN undertakes are - military, diplomatic,<br />

constabulary and benign.<br />

Military Role<br />

The primary military objective of the IN is to deter any military adventurism<br />

against the country, including intervention in <strong>India</strong>'s affairs and subversive
