National Register of Large Dams<br />

As per the latest information compiled under the National Register of Large<br />

Dams (NRLD) maintained by CWC, there are 5174 large dams in the country.<br />

Out of this, 4861 large dams have been completed and 313 large dams are under<br />

construction. The NRLD is available on CWC website.<br />

Water Resource Information System<br />

CWC and ISRO jointly developed Water Resources Information System (<strong>India</strong>-<br />

WRIS) in 2010. Subsequently, four versions of the website of <strong>India</strong>-WRIS were<br />

also launched. The version 4.1 was launched in July, 2015 and is available in<br />

public domain at 1:250000 scale. The information system contains several GIS<br />

layers on water resources projects, thematic layers like major water bodies, land<br />

use/land cover, wastelands, land degradation, etc., environmental layers as well<br />

as infrastructure and other administrative layers. The information system has<br />

all the basic map viewing and navigation capabilities like zoom, overview,<br />

bookmark, table of contents, etc.<br />

Training and Capacity Building<br />

Central Water Commission offers training to water sector professionals every<br />

year. These trainings are organised at National Water Academy (NWA), CWC<br />

Headquarter and field offices of CWC. The National Water Academy, CWC is<br />

a centre of excellence for imparting training on all facets of water resources<br />

development and management covering the different areas of planning, design,<br />

evaluation, construction, operation and monitoring of water resources projects,<br />

and also the application of high-end technology in water sector. The programmes<br />

at NWA are open to all stakeholders of water sector including those from NGOs,<br />

media, private sector organisations, academic institutions, PSUs, individuals<br />

and foreign nationals also.<br />

National Water Academy, Pune<br />

National Water Academy (NWA) is an institute established in 1988 under Central<br />

Water Commission at Khadakwasla, Pune. The objective of NWA is to function<br />

as ' Centre of Excellence' in training and capacity building for all stakeholders<br />

on various aspects of water resources planning, development and management<br />

and to develop institutional capability at the national level for imparting training<br />

in new emerging technologies in water resources sector on continued basis. In<br />

the recent past, many new areas have been added to the NWA's portfolio like e-<br />

SWIS (Surface Water Information System); e-water; preparation of probable<br />

maximum precipitation (PMP) atlases; monitoring irrigation projects using<br />

BHUVAN software; modernization and capacity enhancement of hydropower<br />

projects, etc.<br />
