delegations every year besides taking part in literary festivals and book fairs<br />

abroad.<br />

Sahitya Akademi Library in New Delhi is one of the very few multilingual<br />

libraries which cater solely to literature. With a rich collection of books on<br />

literature and literary traditions in 24 recognized <strong>India</strong>n languages, this library<br />

is one of its kind. In addition to this library, Sahitya Akademi has libraries in its<br />

regional offices in Mumbai, Kolkata and Bengaluru. Total number of registered<br />

members of Sahitya Akademi library is 13,219; total number of books in the<br />

library is 1,72,000 and the library attracts about 150 members every day. For<br />

better dissemination of literature in all the twenty four recognized <strong>India</strong>n<br />

languages, Sahitya Akademi annually participates in about 180 book fairs and<br />

exhibitions across the country.<br />

Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts<br />

The Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) is a national level<br />

academic research centre encompassing the study and experience of all the<br />

arts, classical and folk, written and oral, ancient and modern. Located in the<br />

heart of New Delhi, IGNCA is an autonomous trust under the Ministry of<br />

Culture. It has a rich collection of resources covering a wide range of disciplines,<br />

including archaeology, anthropology, history, philosophy, language & literature,<br />

arts and crafts of <strong>India</strong>, south Asia, south east Asia and west Asia. IGNCA has<br />

a multi-lingual Library Kalanidhi of nearly 200,000 books, 175 journals and an<br />

extensive collection of rare books. The reference library is open and accessible<br />

to all. It includes: 100,000 slides on various facets of <strong>India</strong>n Arts comprising<br />

paintings, sculptures, architecture, illustrated manuscripts and performing arts.<br />

Microfilm versions of manuscripts in Sanskrit, Pali, Persian and Arabic from<br />

nearly a hundred libraries in <strong>India</strong> and other countries. Audio-visual collections<br />

of around 15,000 hours of rare and priceless recordings of music and dance,<br />

documentation of lifestyles, performances and photographs. Over a hundred<br />

DVDs have been published and are available for sale. The Media Centre also<br />

has the facility of computer kiosks to enable research scholars to view videos<br />

from our archives for research purposes.<br />

The Kalakosa Division engages in research and publication of critical<br />

editions of classical texts of <strong>India</strong>n arts and aesthetics along with translations,<br />

commentaries and also publishes analytical interpretative works of eminent<br />

scholars of <strong>India</strong>n arts and Architecture. It is bringing out volumes on <strong>India</strong>n<br />

key concepts under the Kalatattvakosa Series, on fundamental texts under the<br />

Kalamulasastra Series and Analytical and Interpretation writing on<br />

Kalasamalocana Series. This division is also bringing out volumes on area<br />

studies. Lifestyle studies form a core of IGNCA's academic activities. The<br />

division named Janapada Sampada facilitates scholars in pursuing the cultures<br />

of several communities in <strong>India</strong>. Their traditions and art forms, folk arts, fairs<br />

and festivals are studied and documented. The Rock Art Unit focuses on<br />

documenting rock art in the context of archaeological, psycho-analytical and
