up for promoting usage of agro textiles. Textiles Research Associations (TRA)<br />

has developed carbon fibre based space communication system. Low cost<br />

modular toilets using jute fibres have been developed.<br />

Impetus to the Powerloom Sector<br />

The powerloom sector in <strong>India</strong> is predominantly an unorganised sector and<br />

has many micro and small units - with 24.86 lakh powerlooms producing 57<br />

percent of the total cloth in the country. With a view to enhance quality and<br />

productivity of the powerloom, the Government of <strong>India</strong> launched<br />

implementing the IN SITU upgradation of plain Powerlooms as part of PowerTex<br />

<strong>India</strong> under which plain Powerlooms are attached with process control<br />

equipment leading to higher productivity, better quality and more than 50 per<br />

cent additional value realisation. So far, 1.70 lakh plain Powerlooms have been<br />

upgraded under the scheme, with a total Government of <strong>India</strong> subsidy of ` 1.86<br />

crores. Other components under the PowerTex <strong>India</strong> include support for<br />

construction of group work-sheds, setting up of common facility centres, provide<br />

venture capital though tex-venture fund, support for solar energy systems and<br />

access to credit under PowerTex Mudra loans and PowerTex stand-up <strong>India</strong><br />

loans.<br />

Enterprises<br />

The <strong>India</strong>n economy thrives through the process of creation of enterprises. The<br />

MSMEs have been contribuing to expansion of entrepreneurial culture through<br />

business innovations. The MSMEs are widely dispersed across sectors of the<br />

economy, producing diverse range of products and services to meet demands<br />

of local as well as global markets. The contribution of MSMEs in GDP is 33 per<br />

cent in manufacturing sector and 45 per cent in exports. It shows the valuable<br />

contribution that the MSME sector is making in the economy, both in terms of<br />

manufacturing and services.<br />

Sixth Economic Census<br />

As per the results of the Sixth Economic Census, 2013, non-agricultural<br />

enterprises constitute 77.6 per cent or more than three-fourths of all<br />

establishments [excluding crop production, plantation, public administration,<br />

defence and compulsory social security] in the country. The non-agricultural<br />

sector that includes MSMEs and large establishments employed a total of<br />

10,84,11,367 persons. This number is 82.6 per cent of the total employment in<br />

agricultural and non-agricultural establishments [excluding crop production,<br />

plantation, public administration, defence and compulsory social security].<br />

Khadi and Village Industries Commission<br />

Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) established under the Act of<br />

Parliament (No. 61 of 1956), and as amended in 1987 and 2006 is a statutory<br />

organization under the Ministry of MSME and engaged in promoting and<br />

developing Khadi and Village Industries (KVI) for providing employment<br />

opportunities in the rural areas, thereby strengthening the rural economy. KVIC<br />

has been identified as one of the major organizations in the decentralized sector
