ammunition, electronic equipment, earth moving equipment, special alloys<br />

and special purpose steels.<br />

Ordnance Factories<br />

Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) is working on a number of R&D projects,to<br />

provide state-of-the-art battlefield equipment and ammunition to the Services.<br />

These include bi-modular charge system for 155mm x 45 calibre ‘Dhanush’<br />

Gun Armament Upgrade of BMP-II etc. OFB along with DRDO is working on<br />

various R&D projects to enhance self-reliance in important arms and<br />

ammunitions required by the Forces, 7.62 x 51mm Assault Rifle, Protective<br />

Carbine, under Barrel Grenade Launcher Ammunition etc. Besides the above,<br />

13 Ordnance Development Centres of OFB are engaged in development of<br />

futuristic requirements of the Forces such as ‘Futuristic Infantry Combat<br />

Vehicle’. ‘Air Defence Gun for Army’, ‘Mounted Gun System’, for which OFB<br />

has associated with IITs and other Institutions of repute for indigenous<br />

development of technologies and products.<br />

Defence Undertakings<br />

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL),<br />

established in 1940, is a premier aeronautical Company of Asia. HAL, a<br />

Navratna DPSU with 20 production Divisions and 11 R&D centers spread across<br />

the country in nine geographical locations. HAL’s expertise encompasses<br />

Design and Development, production, repair, overhaul and upgrade of Aircraft,<br />

Helicopters, Aero-engines, Accessories, Avionics and Systems. HAL is<br />

providing maintenance support to <strong>India</strong>n Defence Services for all the fleet<br />

supplied by HAL including fleet such as HS-748, Cheetah / Chetak etc for<br />

which OEMs have discontinued their support. The Company also supports<br />

non-HAL produced Aircraft and engines like Mirage 2000, An-32, Seaking<br />

helicopter modules, Gnome engine, TM-333 2B2 Engine etc. HAL’s<br />

maintenance support to <strong>India</strong>n Army and to Coast Guard is 100 per cent of<br />

their fleet and in respect of <strong>India</strong>n Air Force and <strong>India</strong>n Navy it is 75 per cent<br />

and 61 per cent. HAL has positioned itself as a comprehensive solution provider<br />

to the <strong>India</strong>n Defence Services for aviation requirements that include trainer,<br />

fighter, transport aircraft and light helicopters.<br />

Bharat Electronics Limited: Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) a Navaratna PSU,<br />

was established in 1954. BEL has nine manufacturing units across <strong>India</strong>. The<br />

company has core competency in areas of Defence Communications, Radars<br />

& Missile Systems, Sonars & Fire Control Systems, Electronic Warfare and<br />

Avionics Systems, Network Centric Systems, Electro-Optics, Tank Electronics,<br />

Home Land Security etc. Around 88 per cent of turnover comes from these<br />

business segments. In the non-defence area, BEL manufactures Electronic<br />

Voting Machines (EVMs), Tablet PCs (BEL designed), Doppler Weather Radars,<br />

large variety of components like integrated circuits, hybrid micro circuits,
