Medical devices industry is a multi-product industry, producing wide range of<br />

products. <strong>India</strong> is growing as a key market for Medical Devices and Diagnostics.<br />

<strong>India</strong>n Medical Devices industry depends on imports up to an extent of almost<br />

70 per cent. Most hitech innovative products and technology originate from a<br />

well-developed eco-system and innovation cycle which needs to be developed<br />

in <strong>India</strong> to promote indigenous industry and to reduce our dependence on<br />

imports. In September, 2014, the <strong>India</strong>n Government launched the "Make in<br />

<strong>India</strong>" campaign, with the objective of making <strong>India</strong> a global manufacturing<br />

hub; thus, bringing foreign technology and capital into the country.<br />

Medical Devices Market Size<br />

The <strong>India</strong>n medical devices market has grown from USD 2.02 bn (INR 13,130<br />

crores) in 2009 to USD 3.9 bn (INR 25,259 crores) in 2015 at CAGR of 15.8 per<br />

cent.<br />

Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana<br />

The Jan Aushadhi Scheme was launched in 2008 with the aim of selling<br />

affordable generic medicines through dedicated sales outlets i.e. Jan Aushadhi<br />

Stores in various districts across the country. Some of the objectives of the scheme<br />

include: ensure access to quality medicines; extend coverage of quality generic<br />

medicines so as to reduce and thereby redefine the unit cost of treatment per<br />

person; create awareness about generic medicines through education and<br />

publicity so that quality is not synonymous with only high price ; The first Jan<br />

Aushadhi Store was opened at Amritsar in Punjab in 2008. The original target<br />

of the campaign was to establish Jan Aushadhi Stores in every district of our<br />

country. Recently, "Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Yojana" (PMJAY) has been<br />

renamed as "Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana" (PMBJP) and<br />

"Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Kendra" (PMJAK) as "Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya<br />

Janaushadhi Kendra" (PMBJK).<br />

<strong>India</strong>n Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited<br />

<strong>India</strong>n Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited (IDPL) was incorporated in 1961<br />

with the primary objective of creating self-sufficiency in essential life saving<br />

drugs and medicines. The company has presently three manufacturing plants,<br />

one each at Rishikesh (Uttarakhand), Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh) and<br />

Gurgaon (Haryana). IDPL has two wholly owned subsidiaries, namely, IDPL<br />

Ltd., Chennai (Tamil Nadu) and Bihar Drugs and Organic Chemicals Ltd. at<br />

Muzaffarpur (Bihar). In addition, IDPL has two joint sector undertakings,<br />

promoted in collaboration with the respective state governments. These are<br />

Rajasthan Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (RDPL), Jaipur, and Orissa Drugs
