Horticulture is a high value segment of agriculture. In Punjab, with only<br />

4 per cent of total cropped area, horticulture crops are contributing approx.<br />

10.50 per cent GDP to the total agriculture produce.<br />

Irrigation<br />

Since both surface as well as ground water resources in the state have already<br />

been fully utilised as such the increase in agricultural production solely depends<br />

on the improved efficiency of water use. State is focusing on significant<br />

improvements in the economy of water use and in the operational efficiency<br />

by modernisation of existing canal system which is centuries old. During the<br />

year 2016-17 the work of lining of watercourses in a length of 4758 km was<br />

carried out and an area of 210375 hectare brought under better irrigation<br />

facilities by the Punjab Water Resources Management and Development<br />

Corporation. An area of 6700 hectare was brought under irrigation by<br />

installation of deep tube well sand laying under ground pipelines.<br />

Power<br />

Punjab has already achieved status of power surplus state with commissioning<br />

of three new thermal power plants at Rajpura (1400 MW), Talwandi Sabo (1980<br />

MW) and Goindwal Sahib (540 MW) thus totalling to 3920 MW. With this,<br />

now the gross installed capacity is 13960 MW including its own installed<br />

capacity and share from NRSE projects, BBMB and other Cenral Sector projects.<br />

On green energy front, PSPCL has installed capacity/share from central sector<br />

projects of 1253 MW which include solar projects of capacity 830 MW and rest<br />

from non solar projects including biomass and mini/micro hydel projects.<br />

Roads<br />

The total road network length is 71742 km, consisting of 2630 km national<br />

highways 1133 km state highways, 1826 km major district roads and 5119 km<br />

of other district roads(ODRs) and 61034 km rural link roads. Out of the link<br />

roads PWD B&R looks after 31696 km and Punjab Mandi Board looks after<br />

29338 km of link roads.<br />

Aviation<br />

Punjab has two international airports at Amritsar (Rajasansi) and Mohali. First<br />

phase of the terminal building at Mohali airport is complete and awaiting<br />

commissioning.<br />

Fairs and Festivals<br />

Besides festivals of Dussehra, Diwali, Holi, other important festivals/fairs/<br />

melas are Maghi Mela at Mukatsar, Rural Sports at Kila Raipur, Basant at<br />

Patiala, Holla Mohalla at Anandpur Sahib, Baisakhi at Talwandi Sabo, Urs at<br />

Rauza Sharif at Sirhind, Chappar Mela at Chappar, Skeikh Farid Aagman Purb<br />

at Faridkot, Ram Tirath Mela at Village Ram Tirath, Shaheedi Jor Mela at<br />

Sirhind, Harballab Sangeet Sammelan Baba Sodal at Jalandhar. In addition to
