is to provide, establish, endow, maintain, control and manage the Central Schools<br />

(Kendriya Vidyalayas) located all over <strong>India</strong> and abroad. The Government of<br />

<strong>India</strong> wholly finances the Sangathan.<br />

Over the years, the number of Kendriya Vidyalayas steadily increased to<br />

1136 by 2016 including three KVs abroad (Kathmandu, Moscow, Tehran) and<br />

03 non functional KVs. The number of KVs running in double shift are 66.<br />

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas<br />

The National Policy on Education, 1986, envisaged setting up of pace setting<br />

residential Navodaya schools with an aim of providing excellence coupled with<br />

equity and social justice. Consequent to this, Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti was<br />

registered as a Society, under the Society Registration Act, of 1860, with the<br />

objective to establish Navodaya Vidyalayas to provide good quality modern<br />

education - including a strong component of inculcation of values, awareness<br />

of the environment, adventure activities and physical education - to the talented<br />

children predominantly from the rural areas without regard to their family's<br />

socio-economic condition. The opening of a Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya is<br />

based on the proposal from the concerned state/ UT governments offering about<br />

30 acres of suitable land, free of cost. The state government has also to provide<br />

sufficient temporary building and other infrastructures, free of rent, to<br />

accommodate 240 students and staff for three to four years or till such time the<br />

Samiti constructs its own buildings at the permanent site.<br />

National Council of Educational Research and Training<br />

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) provides<br />

academic and technical supports for qualitative improvement of school<br />

education. The NCERT was established on September 1, 1961 as an apex national<br />

body to lead qualitative changes in school education. NCERT has been playing<br />

an advisory role guiding Central and State Governments in formulating Policies,<br />

Acts and government programmes. NCERT has played a crucial role in the<br />

development of National Policies on Education (1968-1986) and National<br />

Curriculum Frameworks. The researches undertaken by the Council have led<br />

to building new perspective of schooling and also provided inputs for<br />

formulation of policies and programmes. NCERT has been designing and<br />

offering innovative and need-based courses for teachers, teacher educators and<br />

counsellors. The curricular and other learning materials developed by the<br />

Council have helped in bringing about quality schooling. NCERT has recognition<br />

both at national and international levels in the area of school education owing<br />

to its work done in the last 50 years. It is a unique institution in <strong>India</strong>, conducting<br />

researches, preparing skilled educational professionals and developing<br />

curriculum and curricular materials. The major constituent units of the NCERT<br />

are: a. National Institute of Education (NIE), New Delhi. b. Central Institute of<br />

Education Technology (CIET), New Delhi. c. Pandit Sunder Lal Sharma Central<br />

Institute of Vocational Education (PSSCIVE), Bhopal. d. Five Regional Institutes
