The Institute conducts a number of post-graduate diploma courses in<br />

print journalism, radio and TV journalism and advertising and public<br />

relations. Beginning in 1969, the Institute has organized a Post-Graduate<br />

Diploma Course in Development Journalism for middle level working<br />

journalists form Asian, African, Latin American and East European countries<br />

under the auspices of the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of <strong>India</strong><br />

since 1969. A number of specialized short-term courses ranging from one<br />

week to twelve weeks are also organized to meet the ever-growing training<br />

needs of communication professionals working in various media/publicity<br />

outfits of Central/state governments and public sector organizations. The<br />

Institute also collaborates with different national and international agencies<br />

in conducting training programmes, seminars, workshops. etc. and in<br />

undertaking research projects.<br />

The Institute endeavours to contribute towards the creation and<br />

strengthening of an information structure suitable not only for <strong>India</strong><br />

requirements, but also those of other developing countries. It provides its<br />

expertise and consultancy services to other institutions/organs of the Central/<br />

state governments, public sector organizations, universities and other<br />

academic institutions. With the growing popularity of the Institute’s training<br />

activities and with a view to meeting regional aspirations, the Institute<br />

opened a branch at Dhenkanal, Orissa in 1993 for catering to the demands<br />

of the eastern region.<br />

At present, the Branch conducts two Post Graduate Diploma Courses—<br />

Journalism (English) and Journalism (Odia). The Government of <strong>India</strong>,<br />

through the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting makes financial<br />

support to the Institute available. The activities of the Institute are guided by<br />

its Executive Council, whose Chairman (Ex Officio) is the Secretary in the<br />

Ministry who is also the President of the Institute (Society). The other<br />

members of the Council include, inter-alia, representatives of the Institute’s<br />

faculty and eminent personalities from the media. Through its continuous<br />

hard work over the last more than four decades of its existence and excellent<br />

delivery mechanism, the Institute has achieved the envious position of a<br />

“Centre of Excellence” in the area of communication teaching, training and<br />

research.<br />

Teaching and Training Programme<br />

The academic and training activities of the Institute can be divided into four<br />

programmes : (i.) Post-graduate Diploma programmes for students : These<br />

comprise four programmes in Journalism and one in Advertising and Public<br />

Relations; 1. Post-graduate Diploma Course in Journalism-English; 2. Postgraduate<br />

Diploma Course in Journalism-Hindi; 3. Post-graduate Diploma<br />

Course in Journalism-Oriya; 4. Post-graduate Diploma Course in Radio and<br />

TV Journalism-English and Hindi; and 5. Post-graduate Diploma Course in<br />

Advertising and Public Relations (English and Hindi).
