Ishan Uday-for Students of North East Region<br />

The UGC has launched a special scholarship scheme for students of north east<br />

region, Ishan Uday from the academic session 2014-15. The Scheme envisages<br />

grant of 10,000 scholarships to students from the region whose parental income<br />

is below 4.5 lakh per annum and would be provided scholarship ranging from<br />

` 3,500 to ` 5,000 per month for studying at under graduate level in colleges/<br />

universities of the country.<br />

Ishan Vikas - Academic Exposure e for North Eastern Students<br />

The programme has been launched with a plan to bring selected college and<br />

school students from the north eastern states into close contact with IITs, NITs<br />

and IISERs during their vacation periods for academic exposure.<br />

Women Leader<br />

Women appointed as chairpersons, board of governors of apex technical<br />

education institutes and in National Institutes of Technology (NITs). For the<br />

first time in the history of IITs, two women scientists were nominated on the IIT<br />

council.<br />

Pragati<br />

Pragati (Scholarship for Girl Students) - Pragati is a scheme of AICTE aimed at<br />

providing assistance for advancement of girls participation in technical<br />

education. Education is one of the most important means of empowering women<br />

with the knowledge, skill and self-confidence necessary to participate fully in<br />

the development process. This is an attempt to give every young woman the<br />

opportunity to further her education and prepare for a successful future by "<br />

Empowering Women Through Technical Education". Salient features of the<br />

scheme include: number of scholarships per annum: ` 4,000 'One Girl' per family,<br />

where the family income is less than ` 6 Lakh /annum The candidates will be<br />

selected on merit at the qualifying examination to pursue technical education<br />

from amongst such candidates. Amount of scholarship: Tuition Fee of ` 30,000/<br />

- or at actual, whichever is less and ` 2,000/- per month for 10 months as<br />

incidentals each year. Reservation-15 per cent for SC, 7.5 per cent ST and 27 per<br />

cent for OBC candidate/applicant. Out of the total number of scholarships in<br />

each scheme, 50 per cent scholarships are available at each degree /diploma<br />

level and also transferable in the event-of non availability of eligible applicant<br />

in any.<br />

Swami Vivekananda Scholarship for Single Girl Child<br />

The dropout ratio at various levels of education for girls is much higher than<br />

that of boys. Keeping Swami Vivekananda's ideas of women education and to<br />

promote girls education, UGC has introduced the Swami Vivekananda<br />

Scholarship for Single Girl Child for research in social sciences with an aim to
